Broome County sheriff identifies Afton woman as victim of fatal crash on Interstate 88

The Broome County Sheriff's Office has released the identity of a Chenango County resident who was killed last month in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 88.

The sheriff's office said the victim was Giovanna Criscitello, 54, of Afton.

The crash occurred May 15 but was not reported immediately due to a delay in notification of family members, according to the sheriff's office.

Around 4:39 a.m. on that date, deputies responded to I-88 westbound near Exit 6 in Harpursville for a reported motor vehicle accident.

Responding patrols located a 2013 Nissan SUV upside down in a ditch along Bates Road. The vehicle was westbound on I-88 when Criscitello failed to negotiate a right hand turn in the highway and entered the center median, the sheriff's office said.

The vehicle then went down an embankment, flipping end over end before coming to rest upside down in the ditch along Bates Road.

Criscitello, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the SUV when it flipped over, investigators said.

She was transported by ambulance to UHS Wilson Hospital for multiple severe injuries. She died from those injuries later in the day, the sheriff's office said.
