Broomfield set for a patriotic good time at its Great American Picnic

Jun. 30—From a beer garden, to food trucks and face painting, the Broomfield County Commons Park, 13200 Sheridan Blvd., is gearing up for another July 4th Great American Picnic this year.

"It feels like a movie — a good old town having their Fourth of July party and the whole community shows up and it just feels really wholesome and awesome," Chris Rubeck said.

Rubeck is a founding member and cook at Ruby Ru's, the beloved eatery that began as a food truck and now has a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Lafayette. Known for its exciting spin on classic food truck menu items like mac and cheese and bourbon chicken, Ruby Ru's is one of many food options that will be serving food at the Great American Picnic.

The food truck will be offering a limited menu for the large event, including jumbo bratwurst, hot dogs and sausages.

Another food option at the picnic will be The Snowy Churro, another food truck with a permanent location in Thornton.

The Snowy Churro began when former high school math teacher Sean Boyer was inspired by a friend with a churro food truck and decided to try an entrepreneurial adventure himself. Boyer said he wanted to approach his establishment with a more elaborate menu, and his idea has grown into him launching eight different food trucks across Colorado, Arizona and Texas.

The Snowy Churro's menu includes classic treats like cinnamon sugar-dusted churros, as well as ice cream and edible cookie dough.

In addition to a plethora of food trucks, the Great American Picnic will include entertainment for the whole family.

Attendees ages 21 years and older can enjoy the beer garden, complete with brews from Broomfield's Rails End Beer Company and Westminster's Windfall Brewing. For kids, the park will be decorated with various inflatables, and children can enjoy face painting as well.

Starting at 5:45 p.m., a bike parade for all ages will begin where attendees can enjoy a loop around the park. Participants can decorate their rides in patriotic gear and meet at 5:30 p.m. at the South Red shelter near Championship Field. Note that children will be required to wear a helmet.

Then at 6 p.m., the vocal band 17th Avenue Allstars and high-energy party band Soul X, both based in Denver, will take the stage. The fireworks show will begin at 9:15 p.m., weather permitting.

Since the venue has limited parking, from 5-11 p.m. there will be a shuttle service available to take attendees to and from Legacy High School, 2701 W. 136th Ave., Broomfield.
