Bros, Fire Island, Omar Apollo Lead 2023 GLAAD Media Award Nominees

It’s time once again for the GLAAD Media awards!

The nominations for the awards, which recognize media for its fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of LGBTQ+ people, were announced by RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Salina Estitties and Sasha Colby in a comedic version of Drag Story Hour called “GLAAD’s Drag Story Time.”

“Look at us, beautiful queens sharing wonderful stories celebrating everybody! Tens across the board!” Estitties said in the video.

“Performers like us are being threatened with anti-LGBTQ bills, nasty protests, and even violence,” Colby added.

“You know what’s scary? People with guns, not queens with books!” Estitties quipped before beginning the categories.

Drag Story Hours across the country have been facing violent protests, laws trying to ban them, and hateful campaigns just for trying to read stories to children.

Among the notable nominees are some of our favorite films, shows, and musical projects of the year.

Bros, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Nope, Spoiler Alert, and Tár all are nominated in the Wide Release film category. Anything’s Possible, Crush, Do Revenge, and Fire Island are all nominated in the TV or Streaming Film category. In the limited-release category, films like The Inspection, Wendell & Wild, Benediction, and Girl Picture are nominated.

Shows like Abbott Elementary, Harley Quinn, Sex Lives of College Girls, Love, Victor, Hacks, and What We Do in the Shadows are nominated for Outstanding Comedy series. 9-1-1: Lone Star, Gossip Girl, Chucky, The L Word: Generation Q, and P-Valley are among the drama nominees.

In the New TV Series category, we’ve got shows like A League of Her Own, Interview with the Vampire, Our Flag Means Death, Queer as Folk, The Rookie: Feds, Willow, and The Sandman.

AHS: NYC, Welcome to Chippendales, The White Lotus, The Real World Homecoming: New Orleans, Trixie Motel, We’re Here, The Big Brunch, Legendary, Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Owl House, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, and High School Musical: The Musical The Series are also nominated in TV categories.

In the music categories, artists like Anitta, Betty Who, Demi Lovato, Fletcher, Hayley Kiyoko, Honey Dijon, Kim Petras, Muna, Orville Peck, and Rina Sawayama battle it out in the Outstanding Music artist category. Brook Eden, Doecchi, Dove Cameron, Ethel Cain, Jordy, Omar Apollo, Renee Rapp, and Steve Lacy are just some of the nominees in a very crowded Outstanding Breakthrough Artist category.

There are several new categories this year, including Outstanding Podcast and Outstanding Live TV Journalism – Segment or Special. The Outstanding Reality Program category was split into two: one for Competition Series and one for Non-Competition Series. Additionally, the Kids & Family Programming category has been split into animated and live-action categories.

Out Magazine, as well as our sister publication The Advocate, are also nominated in the Outstanding Magazine category. And the Advocate Channel's Tracy E. Gilchrist is also nominated in the Outstanding Online Journalism – Video or Multimedia category for her 2022 interview with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner.
