Broward Center’s ‘Newsies’ actors have West Boca, Delray Beach roots

A West Boca High grad and a Delray Beach student are lighting up the stage in the Slow Burn Theatre Company’s production of “Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical” at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

Sam Cadieux is back from New York City to play the lead role of newsboy Jack Kelly. And he’s no stranger to the stage in South Florida, having won a Cappie Award in 2016 for “Best Male Dancer” in West Boca High’s production of “Chicago.”

American Heritage School student Nate Colton, who starts sixth grade in the fall, plays Les, the youngest paperboy. “Newsies” marks his second performance with Slow Burn at the Broward Center. He previously had the role of Michael Banks in “Disney and Cameron Macintosh’s Mary Poppins.”

Palm Beach County audiences may have also seen him in “Musical Memories” at the Delray Beach Playhouse and the Spotlight On Young Musicians choir at the Kravis Center; and as Skipper in “Madagascar Jr.”; Maurice, the narrator in “Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” and Bloat in “Finding Nemo Jr.”

“Newsies” has shows through June 25 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Ave., in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $49 to $65 at BrowardCenter.org, Ticketmaster.com, by calling 954-462-0222, or in person at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office.
