Broward County flooding: Everything you need to know about what’s open and closed

As Broward County continues to deal with extreme flooding issues that saw 26 inches of rain inundate Fort Lauderdale in seven hours on Wednesday — and with more expected today — cities have postponed events, and closed parks and other facilities while crews assess the damage. Schools, libraries, the Fort Lauderdale airport and garbage pickup schedules all have been affected.

This list will be updated as new information becomes available.

Schools

  • All Broward County public schools and district offices are closed and all after-school activities, events and extracurricular activities have been canceled for Friday.

  • Broward College classes and operations are suspended until further notice.

  • Nova Southeastern University has closed the Kids in Distress dental clinic, 819 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, as well as several Fort Lauderdale facilities: NSU Health eye clinic, 1111 W. Broward Blvd.; NSU Health Broward OMFS dental clinic, 1625 SE Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale; NSU East and Oceanographic campuses, 3301 College Ave.; NSU Art Museum and downtown Fort Lauderdale office tower, 1 E. Las Olas Blvd.

  • Coral Springs Charter School, 3205 N. University Drive, is closed Friday.

  • All Pembroke Pines charter schools and Early Development Centers (West and Central Campuses) are closed Friday.

Flights

Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport reopened Friday morning, with the first flights leaving shortly after 9 a.m. Travelers may check their flight status here.

Shelters

The American Red Cross and the City of Fort Lauderdale has opened an emergency shelter at Holiday Park, 1150 G. Martin Drive, Fort Lauderdale. Red Cross workers will provide warm meals, a safe place to sleep, personal care/health items and emotional support for those with disaster-caused needs.

Libraries

Broward County Library locations are open Friday. The North Regional and South Regional branches remain closed.

Tortuga Music Festival

Festival organizer Live Nation on Thursday confirmed that gates should open on schedule at noon Friday at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park with Tortuga’s normal procedures in place and performance schedule intact. Click here for more information.

County facilities

Broward County facilities closed Thursday include:

  • Nancy J. Cotterman Center, Broward Addiction Recovery Center, Medical Examiner & Trauma Services, all in Fort Lauderdale

  • State Attorney’s Office

  • 17th Circuit Court (including all courthouses)

  • Portions of several county facilities, including the main Governmental Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale, are affected. County government is open, but some services are not available Thursday. Residents are advised to call before they go.

  • Port Everglades is open, but residents should call their cruise line before heading there.

  • Animal Care services are not available Thursday, and appointments have been canceled.

County parks

Parks and amenities closed Thursday include:

  • Anne Kolb Nature Center, Hollywood

  • Brian Piccolo Park, Cooper City (athletic fields, pathway)

  • Central Broward Park and Broward County Stadium, Lauderhill

  • Easterlin Park, Oakland Park (campgrounds are not accessible with standard vehicles; park staff is assessing needs of campers)

  • Fern Forest Nature Center, Coconut Creek (foot trails are closed and programs are canceled)

  • Franklin Park, Fort Lauderdale

  • Hollywood North Beach Park

  • Kemp’s Ridley Park, Hollywood

  • Lafayette Hart Park, Fort Lauderdale

  • Long Key Nature Center, Davie (trails closed)

  • Markham Park & Target Range, Sunrise (dog park, mountain bike trails and sporting clays course are closed)

  • NSU Marine Environmental Education Center at Carpenter House, Hollywood

  • Plantation Heritage Park (east playground and restroom #10 are closed)

  • Reverend Samuel Delevoe Memorial Park, Fort Lauderdale

  • Roosevelt Gardens Park Community Center, Fort Lauderdale

  • Secret Woods Nature Center, Dania Beach (programs canceled)

  • Special Populations Section (programs canceled)

  • Sunview Park, Fort Lauderdale (sports fields)

  • Topeekeegee-Yugnee Park, Hollywood (south end and Shelters 0, 1 and 10, including parking lot, walking path, RV campgrounds, basketball court)

  • Tradewinds Park and Stables, Coconut Creek (disc golf, sports fields, pony ring, educational farm)

Trash collection

Waste Management is trying to serve the majority of its customers on a regular schedule, though sections of Broward are currently inaccessible due to street flooding. Gulfstream Park

The park, 901 S. Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, canceled live racing on Thursday and Friday.

Hospitals

Outpatient services at Broward Health Medical Center, 1600 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, will be limited on Friday. Patients and visitors should contact their providers about appointments and procedures. Normal business operations continue with emergency services and at all other Broward Health hospitals.

Dania Beach

  • City Hall, the beach, pier and all parks are closed Friday.

  • The CW Thomas Park New Design Community Gathering originally set for Thursday evening will be rescheduled.

Fort Lauderdale

  • City Hall and facilities are closed Friday.

  • Henry E. Kinney Tunnel remains closed.

  • Reunification centers are open at Holiday Park, 1150 G. Harold Martin Drive, and Winn-Dixie, 941 SW 24th St.

  • Bulk trash services are running, but crews will not service impassable roads.

  • Parking enforcement is suspended until further notice.

  • Micro Mover services are operating on a limited basis.

  • Community Shuttle and Water Trolley services are suspended until further notice.

  • Owners of abandoned cars left on the roadway may call Westway Towing at 954-731-1115 or go to 775 NW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale.

Lauderhill

  • Lauderhill 6-12 Park, Lauderhill Golf Course, NW 35th Avenue Greenway, Ruth Rothkopf Park, Sadkin Center, Wally Elfers Park and Wolk Park remain closed until further notice.

  • The city’s Jazz Picnic Concert originally planned for April 16 is postponed.

  • Waste Management services are operating where trucks can safely pass and pick up. For Waste Management questions, call 954-615-4050. Bus shuttles are running but are avoiding flooded stops.

Oakland Park

City offices and facilities are closed. Sanitation services operated normally Thursday.

Hallandale Beach

Garbage pickup is scheduled as usual. City Hall and all parks are closed until further notice.

Hollywood

  • Garbage collection services for Waste Pro customers was suspended for Thursday. A normal collection schedule will resume as soon as possible.

  • The city is waiving parking fees for Hollywood residents for the four city-operated public parking garages. Hollywood residents, with proof of residency, may park their cars in the garages for the next 24 hours, free of charge. Vehicles must be parked in marked, designated parking spaces.

Plantation

  • City Hall and offices are closed and all meetings are canceled on Thursday.

  • All building inspections will be rescheduled.

  • Garbage service is on a normal schedule.

Wilton Manors

  • Colohatchee Dog Park, 1975 NE 15th Ave., is closed. The Woof & Wine event there has been rescheduled to 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 27.
