Broward schools closed Thursday amid flooding threat

All Broward County public schools will be closed Thursday as the downpour that has been hammering South Florida since Tuesday night continues.

The School District said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, late Wednesday that all schools and district offices will be closed Thursday. As of late Wednesday night, Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade schools will be open.

In Broward, before and after-school activities also are canceled, in addition to night classes, sporting events, field trips, scheduled meetings and any other night events, the statement said.

Superintendent Peter Licata and staff have been in “constant communication” with the county’s emergency management staff throughout Wednesday, the School District said in a statement shortly after 10 p.m. The district will inform parents later if make-up days are needed because of the closure.

All Pembroke Pines Charter Schools will also be closed Thursday, city officials said in a post on X.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials announced campuses would remain open Thursday in a post on X shortly after Broward County Public Schools announced their closures.

The National Weather Service Miami is forecasting the possibility of up to 10 inches of rain in some areas of South Florida and likely flash flooding in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties as the heavy storms continue.

Nearly all of the populated areas of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties are included in a flood watch until 10 a.m. Thursday. The downpours are expected to last overnight and recur off and on throughout Thursday, forecasters said.
