Brown County's COVID-19 cases fall 27.8%; slight increases in Door, Kewaunee, Oconto counties; Wisconsin cases plummet 17.7%

Wisconsin reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 6,656 new cases. That's down 17.7% from the previous week's tally of 8,092 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Wisconsin ranked 15th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 19.4% from the week before, with 323,859 cases reported. With 1.75% of the country's population, Wisconsin had 2.06% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 10 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Brown County reported 364 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 504 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 97,033 cases and 588 deaths.

Door County reported 45 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 45 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,157 cases and 79 deaths.

Kewaunee County reported 25 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 18 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,453 cases and 61 deaths.

Oconto County reported 58 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 47 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 12,663 cases and 126 deaths.

Shawano County reported 63 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 73 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 13,313 cases and 158 deaths.

Marinette County reported 66 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 74 cases and two deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 13,384 cases and 139 deaths.

Across Wisconsin, cases fell in 53 counties, with the best declines in Dane County, with 781 cases from 1,084 a week earlier; in Milwaukee County, with 972 cases from 1,275; and in Brown County, with 364 cases from 504.

Within Wisconsin, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Menominee County with 307 cases per 100,000 per week; Chippewa County with 217; and Lincoln County with 196. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Milwaukee County, with 972 cases; Dane County, with 781 cases; and Waukesha County, with 368. Weekly case counts rose in 16 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Chippewa, Columbia and Oconto counties.

In Wisconsin, 43 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 30 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,866,634 people in Wisconsin have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 15,263 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,397,885 people have tested positive and 1,059,605 people have died.

Hospitals in 17 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 17 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
