Brown to sign his self-help book on Saturday

Aug. 5—LENOIR — Dr. Michael B. Brown is an author, motivational speaker, and adjunct professor who teaches positivity to audiences of all ages with a proven approach to discovering meaning, healthy relationships, and happiness in everyday life.

Today, Saturday, Aug. 6, Brown will be signing his latest book, "The Love Principle: Daily Practices for a Loving and Purposeful Life" at Tybrisa Books in downtown Lenoir from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For a decade, Brown served as a successor to Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (author of "The Power of Positive Thinking") as senior minister at Marble Collegiate Church on 5th Avenue in New York City. He has served on the faculties of Wake Forest University and New Brunswick Theological School, and he is currently a professor of biblical studies at High Point University. He also teaches an online course for Duke Divinity School.

Brown has hosted four ABC specials, one NBC special, one PBS fundraiser, and has made guest appearances on numerous national podcasts, radio, and TV programs.

His book was part of the 2020 PBS show, "5 Steps to a Loving and Purposeful Life."

Brown received The Norman Vincent Peale Award for Positive Thinking from the Peale Foundation and currently does inspirational and motivational speaking in a wide variety of venues.

In "The Love Principle," Brown provides a clear path through a discipline of daily loving that will lead readers to purpose and joy in life. The book contains chapters about self-love, romantic love, forgiveness, and more.

"It may sound like a lot, but people who try to carry the burden of unresolved anger, it's just too weighty, its malignant," he said. "If you're looking for joy in your life, there's not enough room for joy and anger."

One chapter in the book features Brown's Top 10 List of Daily Loving, which is a list of 10 things he does everyday that help him live in these principles.

"They're simple, but not always easy," he said. "The way the book is designed, it sounds soft. But when you read it, hopefully you realize that it's not, that loving is a discipline. It's a choice we make, a platform on which we can build a life. If we choose to do that, it sets in motion a kind of living we do in relationship to community, family, business, and understanding of self."

The book signing on Saturday is Brown's first time at Tybrisa Books.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity," said Brown. "I think Lenoir is such a neat community. I spend summers at Blowing Rock, just up the hill. I love Lenoir; it's a neat, hidden gem."

While Brown's career has focused mainly in the ministry, he said he hopes that "The Love Principle" will speak to every person regardless of religious affiliation.

"Doesn't matter who you are, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, spiritual but not religious, or atheist, this book has principles to help your life make sense and to find your journey," Brown said. "I hope it helps people find a kind of life that makes them want to get up in the morning."

His book "The Love Principle" is just one way that Brown strives to bring more joy and happiness into the world.

"These days, there's so much division, so much anger, and we separate ourselves in partisan ways," he said. "We've lost the senses of civility and neighborliness ... the answer to that is, I believe, developing a discipline that is infused with things like kindness, listening, and empathy."

Brown currently lives in Winston-Salem with his wife, Page Plummer Brown. Together they have four kids and two grandkids.
