Brown soars at Spartan Invitational

Mar. 27—SAWMILLS — Hibriten's Jada Brown won the girls' long jump and triple jump at Saturday's Spartan Invitational.

The junior leaped 27 feet, 2 inches to prevail in the long jump. She soared 38 feet, 1 inch in taking the triple jump.

Maggie Taylor, another Hibriten junior, won the girls' shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 7.5 inches.

South Caldwell junior Levi Bowman crossed first place in the boys' 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:57.10.

The Spartans' Suan Moore, a junior, prevailed in the boys 300 hurdles (42.98).

South's 4X100 relay won (44.94).

Brown also finished runner-up in the 100 (13.16).

Moore placed second in the boys' 100 (11.75).

South's Sawyer Thompson crossed second in the boys' 800 (2:15.89).

Hibriten's Gabriel Suddreth claimed third in the boys discus (124-3). South Caldwell's Eathan Jarrett got third in the boys' pole vault (10-0).

Also taking third as the Spartans' 4X800 relay (11:16.44). South's Dorian Arnold earned third in the 200 (23.82) and 100 (11.84).

South freshman Clara Noble came in third in the girls' 3,200 (14:55.51). Savannah Williams was third in the girls' 100 hurdles (19.11).

The Lady Spartans' relays notched a couple of thirds in the 4X100 (1:03.36) and 4X800 (12:31.10).

Williams (58.11) and teammate Skyla Corey 58.67) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 300 hurdles.

In the girls' pole vault, South's Jenna Suddreth (6-0) and Corey (5-0) were fourth and fifth, respectively. The Lady Spartans' Kendra Lail (78-6) was fourth in the discus.

The Spartans' Parker Bowman was fourth in the 3,200 (11:21.27).

South's Holden Fulcher (2:27.77) got fifth in the boys' 800. Logan Hinston was fifth in the boys' high jump (5-0).

Moore got fifth in the triple jump (38-7).

Hibriten Tennis

LENOIR — The Panthers defeated winless Hickory Christian Academy 5-4 last Friday.

Winning for the Panthers (8-3) were Ben Waechter at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-1), Dane Bley at No. 5 (6-1, 6-1) and Aedon Stevens at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).

Logan Clark and Waechter prevailed in No. 1 doubles (8-2) and Wade Van Horne and Miles Dyer took No. 2 (8-5). The Panthers lost No. 3 doubles

Losing for Hibriten in singles were Ridge Hedrick at No. 2 (7-6, 1-6, 10-8), Zack Wright at No. 3 (7-6. 6-3) and Dylan Greene at No. 4 6-2, 7-5).

South Caldwell Baseball

MORGANTON — The Spartans overwhelmed Freedom 13-3 in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game.

Ellias Morales was on the mound four innings for South (6-3, 1-1), throwing 63 pitches. Davis Smith pitched one inning (seven) pitches and Graham Watters closed the final two innings (32 pitches).

Freedom is 3-6, 0-2.

West Caldwell Baseball

CATAWBA — The Warriors remained winless is getting blanked by Bandys.

Joshton Blankenship managed West's only hit, but he did steal two bases.

The Trojans (5-5, 4-2) led 8-0 after two innings and punched in two more in the fourth to enforce the mercy rule.

Blankenship was on the mound 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. He threw a wild pitch and hit a batter.

Dawson Barrett hurled 1 1/3 innings, yielding four hits and seven earned runs. He fanned three, walked three, hit two batters and had one wild pitch.

Bandys' Scotty Miles batted 3 for 3 with six RBIs. He slugged a home run, triple and double.

South Caldwell Softball

MORGANTON — The Lady Spartans blasted Freedom 15-1 on a two-hitter.

South led 5-0 after its first at-bat, and were up 11-1 through three innings. Four runs in the fifth enforced the mercy rul.

The Lady Patriots (2-7, 0-2) used three pitchers.

South is 7-1.

Hibriten Softball

LENOIR — Ashe County erupted for 18 hits in a 16-1 Northwestern 3A/4A Conference drubbing of the Lady Panthers.

It was 3-1, before the Lady Huskies (5-1, 1-1) cut loose for eight runs in the fourth inning and tacked on five more in the fifth.

Ashe's Mileah Lowell struck out eight and walked one.

Becka Won sick batted 3 for 4 with five RIBs and a double. Lowell rapped two hits with four RBIs and a double, while Isabella Farmer went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs..

Hibriten dropped to 5-3, 1-1.

West Caldwell Softball

CATAWBA — Bandys recorded the 4-0 CVAC shutout of the Lady Warrior (8-4, 3-3).

Ellie Hale struck out eight for Bandys (8-2, 5-1), allowing one hit and three walks in 5 1/3 innings

Owen Lyall closed the final 1 1/3 innings, fanning two and walking one.

South Caldwell Soccer

SAWMILLS—Mountain Island Charter shut down the Lady Spartans 5-4.

For the winner (7-2), Jaida McGrew booted four goals. Lydia Robinson registered six saves.

Mountan Island led 3-0 at intermission.

South is 5-4.
