Brownie brittle with a popular candy is recalled. It could cause serious allergy issues

This recall may rattle a lovable Steven Spielberg movie character. That’s because there’s a recall of a product that is made using Reese’s Pieces.

It’s right there in the title of the candy E.T. the alien ate in the 1982 film.

Second Nature Brands is recalling its 4-ounce packages of Gluten-Free Reese’s Pieces Brownie Brittle because the treat may contain undeclared wheat, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration release on March 23.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat could risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they eat the recalled Gluten-Free Reese’s Pieces Brownie Brittle.

The product was distributed nationwide by the Michigan-based company in retail stores and online. Reese’s Pieces’ other candies are not a part of this recall.

One illness has been reported as of the recall date.

According to the FDA, the recall was initiated after it was discovered that the gluten-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat. The problem was caused by cross-contamination at a co-manufacturer, resulting in undeclared wheat in the Gluten-Free Reese’s Pieces Brownie Brittle.

“Production of the product has been suspended until the FDA and the company are certain that the problem has been corrected,” the FDA reported.
