Browns and Jets to kick off 2023 NFL preseason in Canton in Pro Football Hall of Fame Game

CANTON — Stark County's wait for the Cleveland Browns to return to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game ends this year.

The Browns will play the New York Jets in the 2023 Hall of Fame Game, which is set for Thursday, Aug. 3, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The Hall announced the matchup Wednesday afternoon.

The Browns playing in the game has been widely anticipated since former Cleveland left tackle Joe Thomas was announced as part of the Hall of Fame's Class of 2023 earlier this month. The Jets are no surprise either. This year's Class also features two former Jets, cornerback Darrelle Revis and defensive lineman Joe Klecko.

The matchup kicks off the National Football League’s 104th season in the city of the league's birthplace.

This will be the Browns' sixth appearance in the Hall of Fame Game, but their first since 1999 when they played the Dallas Cowboys in Cleveland's return to the league as an expansion team. The Jets are appearing in the game for the third time.

The Browns hosted the Jets in their home opener this past regular season and lost 31-30 in improbable fashion, squandering a two-score lead in the final two minutes. That set the tone for the Browns in what became a disappointing 7-10 season.

The Jets also went 7-10, losing their final six games of the season. They featured the 2022 Associated Press NFL rookies of the year on both sides of the ball — receiver Garrett Wilson on offense and cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner on defense. A late TD catch by Wilson helped the Jets complete their comeback win over the Browns in Week 2.

When was the last time the Browns played in the Hall of Fame Game?

After a three-year absence from the NFL after the franchise's move to Baltimore, the Cleveland Browns returned as an active team in 1999. The Browns' first game back was on Aug. 1 that year against the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game. It was the first Hall of Fame Game to go overtime, with the Browns winning 20-17. It was a brief highlight for a Browns season that ended with a 2-14 record.

That Hall of Fame Game appearance coincided with Ozzie Newsome's enshrinement into the Hall along with the Class of 1999.

Who is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2023?

In addition to Joe Thomas, Darrelle Revis and Joe Klecko, the class features cornerback Ronde Barber, linebacker Zach Thomas, defensive end DeMarcus Ware, coach Don Coryell, cornerback Ken Riley and linebacker Chuck Howley.

They will be enshrined in Canton on Aug. 5.
