Browns quick hits: Right guard Wyatt Teller likely to miss Ravens game with calf injury

BEREA − The calf injury that sidelined Wyatt Teller for the final three quarters of last Sunday's loss to New England is likely to put him on sideline this Sunday when the Browns play at Baltimore.

Teller told a small group of reporters Wednesday, including the Beacon Journal, the calf injury was similar to the one which he dealt with in 2020. He missed three games with that injury, which he sustained in a Week 5 win over Indianapolis.

Teller was in a walking boot on his left leg during the brief period of time in which he was in the locker room Wednesday during the time the locker room was open to the media.

Coach Kevin Stefanski refused to officially rule Teller out on Wednesday. However, he did say it was "doubtful" he would play against the Ravens.

"It's doubtful, I would tell you," Stefanski said. "I don't like ruling guys out on Wednesday. So, we'll see how treatment goes and those things. He'll continue to rehab and try to make it back."

This injury occurred on the Browns' third possession of the game against the Patriots, which ended on a failed Jacoby Brissett quarterback sneak. Her was replaced by Hjalte Froholdt, whose only previous offensive snaps this season had come as a fullback in jumbo packages.

"He's an option," Stefanski said of Froholdt. "There's a bunch of different guys who have played there. Hjalte was a guy who finished out the game last week, but we'll kind of see where we go this week."

The Browns are coming off a game in which they ran the ball `just 29 times for 98 net yards against New England. Over the 15 snaps in which Teller played, they ran it eight times, including a jet sweep to Donovan Peoples-Jones, for a net of 21 yards.

Running back Nick Chubb ran for 19 yards on five carries with Teller in and 37 yards on seven carries after he left the game. He finished with just 56 yards on 12 carries.

“It wasn’t working with him in it so," Chubb said of the impact losing Teller had on the running game.. "They did a great job up front so whoever is in there is going to be ready.”

Star-studded injury list for Browns' Wednesday practice

Teller was one of a lengthy list of Browns players who did not practice on Wednesday. He was one of three offensive linemen alone who were on the field, as All-Pro left guard Joel Bitonio was listed with a rest day, while All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin sat to rest an ankle injury sustained in the second half against New England.

All-Pro defensive ends Myles Garrett (shoulder, biceps) and Jadeveon Clowney (ankle, knee) also were out. Clowney missed the Patriots game, while Garrett spent the final eight defensive snaps on the sideline after reaggravating the shoulder injury he sustained in his Sept. 26 car accident.

"He's coming along," Stefanski said of Clowney, whose missed three-and-a-half of the last five games with injuries. "He's rehabbing very hard. He wants to get out there. I think just see him practice and make sure physically he can be himself."

Garrett had an X-ray on his shoulder earlier this week that came back negative, He said after the New England game he planned to play in Baltimore, which Stefanski confirmed that as still the plan on Wednesday.

Cornerback Denzel Ward and offensive lineman Joe Haeg both sat due to being in the concussion protocol. Both missed last Sunday's game.

Receiver Amari Cooper was given his usual Wednesday veteran's rest day. Tight end David Njoku, who was not on the pre-practice injury report, also had a rest day.

Linebacker Tony Fields II was out with illness.

Deion Jones getting closer to making Browns debut

Hours after the Browns lost to the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 9, they went out and acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Deion Jones from the Atlanta Falcons. At the time he was acquired, he was still on the injured reserve list recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

A week ago, the Browns designated Jones for return from injured reserve. However, he was not activated to play in the Patriots game.

Stefanski was asked, outside of Jones, if there were any personnel changes which could occur on the defense.

“No," Stefanski said. "Deion, we are hoping that he gets up to speed this week. Other things would be just seeing who is available and that type of thing.”

Jones has been practicing for a week now with the Browns. His exact role, though, remains uncertain, even to his teammates.

"Not really completely sure," linebacker Jacob Phillips said. "Obviously as a room we always preach that we need everybody and we all prepare the same throughout the week to be able to go and execute.”

Mark Andrews, J.K. Dobbins among Ravens not practicing Wednesday

The Ravens also had a fairly lengthy list of players not on the field for Wednesday's practice. That list included tight end Mark Andrews, running back J.K. Dobbins, receiver Devin Duvernay, right tackle Morgan Moses, fullback Patrick Ricard, guard Ben Cleveland, defensive end Calais Campbell and cornerback Marcus Peters.

Per the official Ravens injury report, Andrews, Dobbins and Ricard were due to knee issues, although Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said it was a rest day for Andrews; Campbell and Cleveland were foot issues; and Moses was a heel issue. Duvernay and Peters were both listed officially as rest days.

Receiver Rashod Bateman (foot) and outside linebacker Justin Houston (groin) both returned to practice in a limited basis. Quarterback Lamar Jackson (hip) and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley (rest/ankle) were also limited.

Receiver DeSean Jackson, signed to the practice squad, practiced for the first time on Wednesday. There's speculation out of Baltimore Jackson could be added to the active roster as early as this Sunday.

“We’ll see, it’s a great question," Harbaugh told Baltimore reporters of DeSean Jackson's status to play. "We’ll just see where it goes. He’s on the practice squad, did his job today on the practice squad. [He] looked good, looked like he’s in shape. We’ll just take it from there.”

Jacoby Brissett knew when to give up hoop dreams

There's an alternate universe where Jacoby Brissett is possibly playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers instead of the Cleveland Browns. Coming out of Dwyer High School in South Florida, he was recruited as a Division I athlete for both football and basketball.

While he ended up committing to the University of Florida to play football, he also had an offer to play basketball for the Gators. That was among several he had from Power-Five programs, including South Carolina, hometown Miami and Virginia Tech.

At Dwyer, Jacoby Brissett was also a basketball star.

Brissett, who would eventually transfer from Florida to North Carolina State to finish his college football career, could see the writing on the wall when to give up his NBA dreams.

"Uh, when 6-8 point guards were doing what I was doing," Brissett said Wednesday. "I gave that up a long time ago."

Browns release safety Richard LeCounte III from practice squad

The Browns on Wednesday released safety Richard LeCounte III from the practice squad. The 2021 fifth-round pick was signed to the practice squad two weeks ago after being released from the active roster.

LeCounte is the first draft pick by general manager Andrew Berry to be cut by the Browns.
