Brownstown Township caddie earns full college scholarship

BROWNSTOWN TWP. — Twenty Michigan students, including Nilah Hughes of Brownstown Township, were recently awarded the Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship, a full housing and tuition scholarship awarded to golf caddies.

The four-year scholarship is worth an estimated $125,000. Other area caddies have earned the scholarship in the past.

Nilah is the daughter of Nevin and Tanya Hughes. She attends Inter-City Baptist School in Allen Park and is a caddie at Meadowbrook County Club in Northville.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on their caddie record, grades, financial need and character. In all, 340 U.S. caddies will receive the scholarship this year. Currently, a record number of 1,130 caddies are attending 24 U.S. universities as Evans Scholars. The award is named for Chicago amateur golfer Charles "Chick" Evans Jr.

"The number varies by year, but the Western Golf Association has made a concerted effort in recent decades to create opportunities for more female and BIPOC (Black, indigenous and other people of color) students nationwide to earn the scholarship. This year, there are five female scholars from Michigan," Spanjer said.

The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Glenview, Ill., has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. To learn more, visit wgaesf.org.
