Brownsville Veterans Memorial seniors receive National Merit recognition

Sep. 28—Three seniors at Veterans Memorial Early College High School have received letters of commendation from the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Veterans Memorial Principal Linda Gallegos presented letters from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to Alejandro Villanueva, Karina S. Linan, and Richard E. Zayas, recognizing them for exceptional academic promise.

The three join about 34,000 commended students throughout the nation who are being recognized for exceptional academic promise.

Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, commended students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The commended students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success and represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishment, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of education excellence in the nation, Brownsville ISD said in a news release announcing the commendation letters.

The district said it hopes the recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.
