Heavy, wet snow - as much as 18 inches - could fall on Erie County by Monday night
As much as a foot and a half of snow could fall on Erie County by Monday night.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a winter storm warning beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday and lasting until 1 a.m. Tuesday for the Erie region. Snow should begin falling later Sunday evening, with total snow accumulations up to 14 inches by late Monday morning. Two to 4 inches of snow could add to that total by late Monday evening. The watch is for Erie and Crawford counties.
The heaviest snow will occur between 10 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to the National Weather Service. Snowfall rates up to 1 inch to 2 inches per hour will be possible. Snow will be wet and heavy, which could lead to tree damage and power outages.
Temperatures will remain around the freezing mark through Tuesday night. Gusting winds to 30 mph are also expected Monday afternoon through Monday night.
Totals could be lower
The 18-inch totals are on the high end of the Weather Service's models. Snow totals could be less than 10 inches, according to some models.
"As the system gets closer, typically we start to see that spread decrease a little bit," said Karen Clark, meterologist for the National Weather Service in Cleveland.
"When we produce our weather forecast, part of what goes into that is different solutions and there are several models that we look at. As we get closer in time, we get a better ability to sample the atmosphere, and we hope the solutions will get closer," she said on Sunday morning.
Sometimes the models are way off. Lake-effect snow expected for earlier last week didn't show up at all in the Erie area.

Odd/even parking remains in effect in Erie
A reminder that — due to forecasted heavy snow — the City of Erie and the Erie Parking Authority's winter parking regulations remain in effect on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
These regulations allow plow trucks to better clear neighborhood streets. Winter parking regulations permit parking on only one side of the street depending on the day of the week. Affected streets are posted with signs designating odd-even parking.
