The E Street Band guitarists are making moves off stage while the band is on tour.

Nils Lofgren has just released “Ain't the Truth Enough,” the first single from his upcoming new album, “Mountains.”

The driving, melodic track features Ringo Starr on drums and Bruce Springsteen singer Cindy Mizelle on background vocals. The song is a wife's lament to her husband, who participated in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“I felt I had to go deep, and with the global war on women, and man’s deadly epidemic of lies and spin for money and power, I imagined a fierce, loving mother and wife dealing with a husband recently home from the insurrection,” said Lofgren in a statement, adding Mizelle added the woman’s voice "with great soul and power."

"I felt inspired, and a day later this special song was done," Lofgren continued. "Not mean spirited — all truth, harsh reality.”

“Mountains” will be released on July 21. It also features appearances by Neil Young, the Howard Gospel Choir, Ron Carter, and the late David Crosby.

“These songs are all born of raw emotion,” Lofgren said. “I gave myself permission to share my fear and my anger, my love and my hope, to be open about what I was experiencing without overanalyzing or editing the life out of it.”

Concurrent with the release of “Mountains” there's the “Rockality” video series composed of 30- to 40-minute videos of Lofgren speaking on his career in music. He's been a solo star, as well as a member of Grin; Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and the E Street Band, which he joined in 1984.

“As people seem to find my musical stories entertaining for the last half century, I thought we’d share some more with you,” Lofgren said. “From opening for Jimi Hendrix on my 19th birthday with Grin, knocking on Jimi’s trailer and getting to speak with him and thank him for inspiring me to be a professional rocker, back to my early high school drop out, 17-year-old runaway in Greenwich Village days, walking in on Neil Young and Crazy Horse in D.C. for advice on their first tour, which led to recording the 'After The Gold Rush' album at 18, I’ve had an eventful, topsy-turvy ride for 55 years now.”

Little Steven Van Zandt, whom Lofgren replaced in 1984 before both signed up for the reunion tour in 1999, recently played two shows the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank with his Disciples of Soul. Those shows were filmed for a future release.

Before then, Little Steven’s Underground Apothecary products, including his Jungle Javas, Manuka Honey Teas, and scented soy candles, are now available in Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels across the country, with the notable exception of the Hard Rock in Atlantic City.

“You want to try develop better habits if we can do it. Try to get some of the sugar out of our system, which creates anxiety,” said Van Zandt, a Middletown native, last October to the USA Today Network New Jersey. “Our country is one-third obese — that creates anxiety. So you want to try to help people develop better habits, that’s the bottom line.”

Van Zandt lost a substantial amount of weight in the last year, which is evident when he's on stage with the E Street Band. Upcoming shows include May 13 and 15 at the La Defense Arena in Paris.
