The secret to a happy Thanksgiving?
It's sweet potatoes covered with marshmallows, says Bruce Springsteen.
“I hope you had a great Thanksgiving,” said Springsteen while performing “Don't Play That Song” on Thursday, Nov. 24, Thanksgiving night episode of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” “I hope you ate your turkey and the mashed potatoes and the sweet potatoes with the marshmallows on top, yes!”
The Boss then implored the Roots, the show's house band, to join in with the Springsteen Night Shift band on “Don't Play That Song,” and the result was an R&B rave-up that swung into the night.
The groups reprised the performance as Fallon signed off for the night. The Springsteen appearance on Fallon was the fourth and final of his “takeover” run. The Boss and band performed “Nightshift” on the Nov. 16 episode; “Turn Back the Hands of Time” on Nov. 15; and “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)” on Nov. 14.
All the songs are from the new album of soul covers by Springsteen, “Only the Strong Survive.” The album debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 album chart last week.
The Night Shift band includes Ron Aniello, musical director and guitar; Rose Blanshei, bass; Zoe Brecher, drums; Anthony Almonte, percussion; David Sancious and Henry Hay, keyboards; Francesca Dardani and Katie Jacoby, violin; Eddie Manion, baritone sax; Curt Ramm and Barry Danielian, trumpet; Richard “LaBamba” Rosenberg, trombone; Stan Harrison, tenor sax; and Curtis King, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Felicia Douglass, Dennis Collins, Fonzi Thorton and Vaneese Thomas, background vocals.
Springsteen was the featured guest on Nov. 23 episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” He spilled the beans on his predilection for Thanksgiving sweet potatoes with marshmallows there, and his preference for canned cranberry sauce.
“My main thing on Thanksgiving is not the turkey. It’s the sweet potatoes covered with the marshmallows and canned cranberry sauce,” Springsteen said. “I don’t want to see any real cranberries in that cranberry sauce. I want it coming out of the can, slice by slice, so I can put it on my plate.”
