Brunello Cucinelli elevated knitwear and precious fabrics to the nth degree with his collection for fall.

Case in point: a puffer in ribbed cashmere. Knitwear influenced all the categories, from coats and blazers to the accessories, as in a stunning crochet cross-body bag in cashmere.

Cucinelli has built his company on the value of gentleness, expressed even more than ever in his fall collection, which was an ode to feel-good, comfortable looks and cocooning shapes, telegraphing a sense of protection and well-being.

These are also surely investment pieces, as Cucinelli didn’t scrimp on natural fibers, from the ubiquitous cashmere to wool, silk, alpaca and mohair.

In a Zoom preview from the brand’s headquarters in Solomeo, his daughters Carolina and Camilla said they questioned what they needed from fashion right now, aiming for functionality yet also looking for freedom.

The brand succeeded in delivering aesthetic harmony, with a color palette that in itself was as soothing as can be, with earthy tones of cream and delicate beige, touches of golden brown and soft grays and winter whites. Even the pastels were toned down and unsaturated.

Nothing was too tight or formal, as volumes were soft and silhouettes fluid and cozy.

Cucinelli presented the masked models posing in the gardens surrounding the medieval hamlet of Solomeo, which he restored. The setting fit perfectly with the designs, as tweeds and checks felt at home in the countryside.

Coats looked — and most likely felt — like cardigans. Lurex speckles lit up a felt sweater; a coat came in mohair treated to look like fur; an embroidered dress in alpaca and cashmere with a paisley design had a 3D effect. Alpaca was also crafted with a lace effect, and a knitwear top was embellished with organza and sequins. There were also jersey blazers, softly shaped pants and fringed midi-skirts with slits.

Any of these pieces could also double up as a much needed — yet super chic — security blanket in these uncertain times.
