Brunswick County Sheriff's Office: Deputy accidentally shoots suspect during search

A Brunswick County deputy unintentionally discharged a weapon, leaving a suspect with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound Thursday morning, according to a news release from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

Members of the vice and narcotic's unit and SWAT team were executing a search at a residence on Rebel Trail in Shallotte when an "accidental and unintentional" shooting occurred, the release said.

According to the release, an officer's weapon was discharged and a suspect was struck in the leg while officers were securing the residence. The suspect was transported to a medical facility and sustained a non-life-threatening injury.

An investigation into the incident will be conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the sheriff's office said.
