The town of Belville will celebrate Founders Day on Saturday, May 6 at Belville Riverwalk Park.

The town of Belville will celebrate its 46th anniversary, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Belville Riverwalk Park, 580 River Road, Belville.

This free family fun will provide live entertainment, music, arts and crafts, inflatables, and children events. Food trucks and vendors also will be on site.

There will be raffles for Belville's Dragonfly Pond program, charity Manna Ministries and much more.

Wilmington's participation in the Civil War

Wilmington and North Carolina’s unique participation involving slavery will be the focus of Brunswick Civil War Round Table's meeting. The presentation entitled, “Raising Corn, Embankments, and a Little Hell: Impressed Labor and the Wilmington Fortifications" will be given by the guest speaker Jaime Amanda Martinez.

Martinez is professor and chair in the department of history at the University of North Carolina Pembroke. She is also a member of the North Carolina Historical Highway Marker Advisory Committee.  Martinez is the author of "Confederate Slave Impressment in the Upper South."

She also speaks on subjects such as the role of enslaved, free black, and American Indian men in building the Wilmington fortifications.

The presentation begins with an overview of impressment laws enacted in North Carolina in the summer of 1862, and lasted throughout the war. Impressment was the legislated policy of the Confederate government to seize food, fuel, slaves, and other commodities to meet the needs of the Confederate Army.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at the Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Everyone is welcome to attend. Free shredding event

Residents and property owners in Brunswick County can bring items to the free shred event, 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, May 4 to be held at the Brunswick County Government Complex, located at 149 Government Center Drive, Bolivia.

No more than five boxes per resident will be allowed. Please have your items bagged/boxed. There will be staff on site to empty the bags/boxes into the shredder. All bags/boxes will be returned after they are emptied.

'Listen to Your Mother'

Brunswick Little Theatre will be bringing the nationally acclaimed staged reading production of "Listen to Your Mother."

A unique and talented cast of women will read these beautiful hilarious to heartwarming, to emotionally intense diverse true tales about motherhood.

The event will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at the Moose Lodge, 4239 Long Beach Road, SE, Southport. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in person at Ricky Evans Gallery, 211 N. Howe St., Southport or online at https://www.brunswicklittletheatre.com/.

Beer, wine, soda, and snacks will be available for purchase at the bar.

Market on Mulberry

Shallotte Parks & Rec presents The Market on Mulberry. The Market begins it summer season, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturdays, May 6-July 29 at Mulberry Park, 123 Mulberry St., Shallotte. Free admission.

Local vendors will be selling fresh produce, jewelry, soaps, and much more.

NC 4th of July Festival Red, White & Blue Shrimparoo

The NC 4th of July Festival Red, White & Blue Shrimparoo, to benefit the NC 4th of July Festival, will be held Sunday, May 7 at the the American Fish Company, 15 Yacht Basin Drive, Southport. Doors open at 4 p.m. Food will be served from 5 p.m. Cash bar. Live music by R&R.
