The 524 letters discovered in an attic candidly discuss life, marriage, slavery, the Confederacy, and the war.

Davis is an award-winning American historian, and author of more than 40 books on the Civil War.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. The visitor fee is $10, which can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues which can include a spouse. For more information, email John Butler at Brunswickcwrt@gmail.com or call 404-229-9425.

Brunswick Electric auction

Brunswick Electric is hosting its annual auction to raise funds for its community grants program.

Brunswick Electric members will have the opportunity to cast bids for cars, trucks, equipment and more.

The auction will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 through 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at the Brunswick Electric office, located at 795 Ocean Highway W, Supply.

The auction will be conducted in a sealed bid format. Bid sheets will be available in the office lobby during regular business hours. Winners will be notified by a Brunswick Electric representative.

Books for Bailey

Brunswick County Library has started Books for Bailey, a new program that aims to improve the confidence and literacy skills of children by reading to a therapy dog named Bailey.

Bailey is Tricia Robertson’s 9-year-old Collie and has been a therapy dog for the last seven years.

To participate in the program, children must be registered in advance and be able to read independently. While the program is geared toward elementary-aged children, children of any age are welcome to register. Brunswick County Master Gardeners Plant Sale

Just in time for fall planting, Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association presents its online plant sale.

There will be six types of native ornamental grasses, eight moderately salt-tolerant shrubs, two perennials that are proven to withstand the worst of summers, and a hummingbird favorite vine.

Shallotte SummerFest Concert

Summerfest, hosted by the town of Shallotte, begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at Mulberry Park, 123 Mulberry St. The Parlay Band performs. Bring your chair and blanket.

Blood drive

The John E. Jacobs American Legion Post 68 Leland will be holding a blood drive in conjunction with WWAY TV and the Red Cross, Friday, Sept. 9.

There is still a critical shortage, so all blood types are needed.

The blood drive will be held 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at WWAY TV Studios, 1224 Magnolia Village Way, Leland.

Parking will be available at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way. A shuttle will be available to take donors to WWAY TV Studios.

Leland’s 33 Founders’ celebration

The town of Leland will celebrate its 33-year Founders’ celebration on Saturday, Sept. 10. The town’s official incorporation was Sept. 12, 1989.

There will be live music with Masonboro Sound, Gump Fiction and Carolina Casuals throughout the day.

People of all ages can enjoy carnival rides that include a carousel and swings, the Leland Express Train, lots of lawn games, and more. Also local organizations will have booths with interactive activities and information. Food trucks will be on site.

A dazzling fireworks display will cap off the evening.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own coolers, but pets are not allowed.

The celebration will be held 3-9 p.m. at Founders Park, 113 Town Hall Drive. Town Hall Drive will be closed 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and Old Fayetteville Road will be closed starting at 8:30 p.m. through the end of the fireworks.

General parking will be available at North Brunswick High School, 114 Scorpion Drive, N.E. Free shuttles will take participants to and from the event site. Accessible parking will be available at the Leland Library/Brunswick Center at Leland, 487 Village Road, N.E.
