The BTS ARMY Has Mixed Feelings About Sofia Carson's Cover of "Boy With Luv" During the ARDYs

"I used to be super defensive about this, but now I realize it kind of has gone too far."

On June 16, the ARDYs: A Radio Disney Music Celebration, previously known as the Radio Disney Music Awards, took place with Sofia Carson as host. The Descendants 3 actor kicked off the ceremony with a song medley that included BTS’s hit “Boy With Luv,”, and the BTS ARMY has mixed feelings about it.

“Sofia Carson .... the person who photo bombed bts ... and randomly touched hoseok .... for clout .... covered bwl ....” one ARMY posted on Twitter upon seeing Sofia’s opening performance, referring to a moment at this year’s Billboard Music Awards when the actor posed with the group, which some fans thought had taken the group by surprise.

“I don’t like talking sh*t... but this is the same Sofia Carson that jumped into the BBMA photo with BTS and held onto Hobi,” another fan wrote in discontent after the ARDYs performance.

Though some ARMYs are not big fans of Sofia’s tribute, others are more than fine with it, now defending her online. “It confuses me because when sofia carson took a picture with bts because she was a fan y’all got mad and said it was for clout, and when she did a cover of their song proving even further that she is a fan y’all got even more mad? so what’s going on here,” an ARMY wrote, pondering the backlash.

“I think some armys are being harsh on Sofia Carson, I understand y'all are upset of what happened at the bbmas, but bashing her and trending her name is not acceptable. Yes some of the memes are funny but at a certain point it's getting out of hand and ya'll [sic] need to tone it down,” another one added.

Another person also called out people who criticized Sofia's decision to sing only the English language parts of "Boy With Luv." "...y’all clowning Sofia Carson for skipping the Korean part but would’ve still clowned her for ‘butchering’ the language...yet half of y’all don’t know the damn language either...and she got BigHits permission as well...major yikes," the fan pointed out.

It’s totally understandable to take things to heart where our favorites are concerned but, as some ARMYs noted, it’s not okay to be disrespectful for the sake of it. “About the Sofia Carson thing, I used to be super defensive about this, but now I realize it kind of has gone too far. Like yeah she disrespected BTS, I understand why you’re mad, but we should focus on more important things instead of ruining our already toxic reputation,” one ARMY wrote after seeing some of the hateful comments Sofia was receiving.

In the end, ARMYs won the night, celebrating BTS’s Global Phenom award win, and Sofia had a blast covering not only BTS’s track but also Taylor Swift’s “ME!” and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” among others.
