Here are the top five stories today in Houston:

1. Bucha Bio is in the process of setting up its headquarters at East End Maker Hub, the industrial startup incubator in Houston's East End. It specializes in making materials from kombucha, a type of fermented tea, into a leather-type material. (Houston Chronicle)

2. Several animals are available for adoption in Houston shelters including at Australian Shepherds Furever, Camo Rescue, Love And Rescue, and others. About 6.5 million pets are surrendered to animal pounds each year nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. (Houston Patch)

3. 19-year-old Daveyonne Howard has been arrested and charged with murder in the killing of an 11-year-old boy. Police say the child was grabbing Howard's coat from a car when he was shot in the chest and died earlier this month in northeast Harris County. (ABC 13)

4. Harris County and Houston leaders are hinting at coming changes to current COVID-19 recommendations and rules within the area as COVID-19 cases decline. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says the city is reevaluating its mask mandate for city workers as well. (Fox 26 Houston)

5. Mayor Sylvester Turner on Thursday nominated a "well-respected engineer," long-time community leader, and current METRO board member to serve as the next Chair of the public transit agency. Sanjay "Ram" Ramabhadran has served on the METRO Board of Directors since May 2015 and has overseen numerous programs. (City of Houston)
