Michigan: Buchanan advances to girls regional final; Edwardsburg eliminated

For Buchanan's girls basketball team, it was case of déjá vu.

A year ago in the Division 3 regional semifinals, the Bucks trailed Bronson 28-15 with six minutes left in the third quarter before rallying to win 45-37.

Tuesday night at Centreville in the Division 3 regional semis, top-ranked Buchanan was down 37-28 against Bronson at halftime before coming back to prevail 66-59.

Gabe Miller's team got back in the game by opening the second half on a 12-0 run. The Bucks finally took the lead for good when Faith Carson's free throw broke a 59-59 tie.

Buchanan, now 22-1, will see its first regional title chance since 2001 in Thursday's 7 p.m. regional champioship game against Kalamazoo Christian (22-3), a 60-51 winner over Watervliet in Tuesday's other semifinal.

Carson finished with a career-high 35 points, 19 coming in the second half, to go with 17 rebounds and two blocked shots. LaBria Austin added 18 points, 13 in the second half, along with five rebounds and two steals. Katie Ailes had six rebounds and Maddie Young four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Holland Christian 54, Edwardsburg 33

Edwardsburg turned the ball over a costly 26 times in being eliminated by Holland Christian.

Christian got 21 points from Camryn Vandenbosch while advancing to Thursday's title game against Plainwell, an upset 46-42 overtime winner over Olivet.

Averie Markel scored 11 points for the Eddies, who finished 17-8. Chloe Baker added eight and Caitlin Tighe grabbed six rebounds.
