Buchanan’s CIF title wrestling streak comes to an end, plus cousins are state champions

The streak came to an end for the Buchanan High boys wrestling team.

The Bears were attempting for an eighth straight California Interscholastic Federation championship, but couldn’t overcome Poway at Mechanic Banks Arena in Bakersfield on Saturday.

Poway won their fifth state title, setting an all-time new scoring record of 290.5 points.

That proved to be too hard to overcome for Buchanan, which finished with 255 points. Clovis finished with 144 points.

The Bears sent two wrestlers to the championship round.

It was Rocklin Zinkin coming away as a state champion when he defeated Poway’s Edwin Sierra by decision, 2-1, in 113s.

Joseph Toscano came close to being a state champ, but fell to Moses Mirabel of Gilroy, 2-1, in 14s.

Zinkin isn’t the only Fresno-area wrestler coming home with a state medal.

His cousin, Nikade Zinkin of Clovis, is also a state champion when he defeated Jeff Lopez of Clovis West, 3-0 at 126 pounds. It was a rematch of the Central Section Masters at Selland Arena last week, won by Zinkin.

On the girls side, Isabella Marie Gonzales of Clovis East is a two-time state champion when she defeated Kylee Golz of Trabuco Hills, 6-1, at 115 pounds.

Another two-time state champ is Leilani Lemus of Clovis at 170 pounds. She defeated Alexandria Perez of La Costa Canyon by decision 5-0.
