Buchtel defense leads win over Benedictine; Twinsburg, Copley girls soccer stay unbeaten

Buchtel 24, Cleveland Benedictine 19

The new turf looks pretty good.

It looked especially great Saturday afternoon for the host Griffins against the Bengals.

Buchtel (1-4) intercepted three Lucas Kaltenbach passes, sacked him six times, caused a fumble and held Benedictine (0-5) to zero rushing yards in a nonleague game.

Buchtel senior Marcel Boyce Jr. returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown and sophomore Zyaire Lewis caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Stevie Diamond in the second quarter.

Buchtel junior Wiley Cheairs ran for a 28-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Diamond completed 11 of 26 passes for 93 yards and Cheairs totaled 66 yards on 13 carries.

Lewis, junior Damien Johnson and senior Marques Turner each had an interception and junior Elijah Williams recovered a fumble for Buchtel. Seniors Jermaine James, Davion Greenlee and Tinell Edwards were also disruptive defensively.

Griffins junior kicker Demetrion Duvall made a 38-yard field goal and three extra-point attempts on coach Bryan Williams' birthday.

Ryan Rusbosto and Carter Madden scored on assists from Andrew Conti to extend the Warriors’ winning streak to three and unbeaten streak to six.

Quinn Anderson made five saves for Walsh (5-2-2), which hasn’t given up a goal during the winning streak.

Stow 9, Firestone 0

Dallas Wagner (two goals), Seth Stuber, Mateo Garduño, Mason Snyder, Noah Levick, Rory Wilson, Evan Butler and Logan Seaman scored for the Bulldogs (3-5-1) in non-league play.

The Fighting Irish (6-1-2) picked up another hat trick from senior Joey LaTrashe and had scores from Diego Pinto, Christian Kesler and Ben Hutchinson in nonleague action.

Tyler Travis counted assists to Easton Rowell, Sam Robledo and Matt Morgan for the Explorers (8-1-1). Will Hallis and Sam Robledo also scored with Jeremy Samangy and Joe Hallis adding assists.

Bobby Lucey kept the Bulldogs (4-5) from being shut out.

Colin Link kept Copley (5-2-2) from being blanked in a nonleague game with an unassisted goal in the first half.

Kellen McComas and Jackson Herbert starred for the Grizzlies (7-2-1) with second-half goals in a non-conference game.

The Bees (6-2-2) extended their winning streak to three thanks to goals from Danny McCashin (two), Landon Daum, Owen Alber, Kyler O'Reilly, Jacob Hutz and Nate Werthmuller.

Lotus Lemp scored twice for the Grizzlies and Tenley Inestroza added a goal as the Grizzlies (5-4-1) jumped out to a three-goal lead at the break and held on for the shutout. Sydney Smith made eight saves to keep the clean slate.

Walsh Jesuit 3, West Chester Lakota East 0

Reagan Pentz scored twice and had an assist for the Warriors (5-2-2), who won for the fourth time in a row. Kayla Flory also put one in the back of the net. Hannah Pachan added two assists.

The Tigers (9-0) stayed unbeaten thanks to goals from Bree Banach, Arriah Gilmer and Jadyn Harris in a nonleague game.

Medina 4, Amherst 0

Paige Nosse scored twice. Kayla Perfect and Olivia Sipsock each scored once for the Bees (8-1), who won their seventh game in a row. They have outscored opponents 31-0 during the run.

Nordonia 6, Ellet 3

Brianna Garey, Noelle Dubnicka, Kayla Wonsick, Lindsey Beattie, Kylee Johnson and Elysabeth Tench scored for the Knights (5-4), who handed the Orangemen (7-1) their first lost.

The Grizzlies (6-4) looked like they were going to sweep the Blue Devils, but hung on to win an epic five-set match. Aly Snyder (24 digs, 42 assists), Ellie Zuro (13 kills, 20 digs) and Lauren Decker (14 kills, 2 aces) paved the way in the win.

The Bulldogs (6-8) almost pulled off the upset thanks to monster afternoons from Maggie Ruggles (28 points, 5 aces, 17 digs), Delaney Ramsey (12 kills, 3 blocks), Ella Meers (12 points, 24 assists, 6 digs) and Keira McLaughlin (18 assists, 5 digs, 14 points).
