FOOTBALL

Buchtel 19, East 13

The Griffins (4-4, 3-0) are perched alone atop the City Series standings with two league games remaining.

Sophomore Stevie Diamond threw two touchdown passes to senior Marcel Boyce Jr. on Saturday to guide Buchtel to a win over the Dragons (4-4, 2-1) at Ellet High School’s Joseph B. Yost Stadium.

Buchtel junior kicker Demetrion Duvall made 2 of 2 extra point attempts and converted a 21-yard field goal. The Griffins also benefited from a safety when the Dragons had an snap go through the end zone.

Buchtel led 12-0 at the end of the first quarter and 19-7 at halftime.

Diamond connected with Boyce on a 61-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game. The duo hooked up for a 40-yard TD in the second quarter.

“We talk about playing disciplined football,” Buchtel coach Bryan Williams said. “We have been touching on that since December and now guys are buying in and understanding what it takes to win games. … I have seen growth each week from our team.”

East senior Justin Cox threw two touchdown passes to junior Ibraheem Kamara.

Diamond competed 6 of 18 passes for 156 yards. Boyce finished with three receptions for 126 yards and Wylie Cheairs ran for 76 yards on 23 carries.
