Buckets of rain this weekend as remnants of tropical storm Nicole pour on Vermont

If you're making weekend plans, factor in rainboots and an umbrella. The remnants of tropical storm Nicole is due in Vermont Friday, bringing with it substantial rainfall over an 18-hour period.

Following a west-to-east path, the eastern side of the storm is expected to move into our area Friday evening bringing rain around workday's end at 5 p.m. or so, starting generally light and increasing in volume through the night. Saturday morning heavy rains are expected and predictions show it tapering off into lingering showers for the afternoon, according to Meteorologist Conor Lahiff at the National Weather Service Burlington office.

Burlington and the Champlain Valley are expected to make out better than other parts of the state with around 1 inch of rainfall. Portions of eastern and southern Vermont are expected to get 1 1/2 inches, and the nearby St. Lawrence Valley is forecasted to get 2 inches over the 12-to-18 hour period.

River flooding isn't a concern at this time, according to Lahiff, though they are watching the Ausable Forks in the Adirondacks in New York. The region has had dry conditions and most rivers can handle more precipitation right now.

However, there is a potential for storm drains reaching capacity, particularly those in urban areas that could be clogged with leaves, Lahiff said. The National Weather Service recommended clearing drains of debris before the storm hits, in a Tweet it sent out Thursday morning.

Wind is expected to be minimal and temperatures were predicted to be in the 60s Friday and Saturday. However, that changes Sunday when temperatures are supposed to fall, dropping to highs in the 40s, which is more normal for this time of year.

After putting away the umbrella you may want to bring out the winter gear, if you haven't done so already, as the week ahead will be colder than we've experienced this fall.
