Buckeystown man killed in Md. 85 crash

Oct. 19—Frederick County Sheriff's Office deputies are investigating a crash on Md. 85 on Wednesday that killed a Buckeystown man — the second fatal crash in the area in the past two weeks.

Sotir Markoff, 20, of Buckeystown, died from injuries he sustained in the crash, according to a news release from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the intersection of Md. 85 and Executive Way around 1:36 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a crash involving two vehicles.

According to the release, one vehicle was going north on Md. 85 and the driver attempted to turn left on to Executive Way. The other vehicle was heading south on Md. 85.

It was not immediately clear Thursday which vehicle Markoff was in, and a sheriff's office spokesman was unavailable for comment Thursday morning.

Markoff was taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he later died from his injuries, according to the release.

The driver and a passenger from the other vehicle were taken to Frederick Health Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the release. The passenger was later transferred to a local trauma center with serious injuries.

While an investigation into the crash continues, there were no signs of impairment by either driver and speed is not considered a factor, according to the release.

It was the second fatal crash in that section of Md. 85 in about two weeks, according to the sheriff's office.

On Oct. 5, a 76-year-old Frederick woman died in a crash at the intersection of Md. 85 and the entrance to the Westview Shopping Center.

The sheriff's office said a 2010 Honda CRV was northbound on Buckeystown Pike and the driver attempted a left turn into the shopping center. A southbound 2013 Mack Truck hit the Honda in the intersection, the sheriff's office said.

Cpl. Nathan Rector of the sheriff's office said in the news release that drivers should pay attention to new traffic patterns, additional lanes, and increased traffic while driving in the area.
