Bucks County Community College now makes its own beer. Where to try Centurion Ale

Does your college alma mater make it's own beer or offer a degree in brewing?

Students at Bucks County Community College now have a beer on the market and could get a degree in the growing brewery industry. The college's STEM department designed and produced their own Centurion Ale, working with the Moss Mill Brewing Company of Huntingdon Valley.

And, this is just the beginning, according to students in the college's brewing and fermentation science program. They hope to release additional ales, perhaps a new brew every semester.

What is Centurion Ale at Bucks Cpounty Community College?

Amber in color, Centurion Ale is a mix of malted barley grain and hops from a village in southern Germany. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.5%. The college describes its beer as having malt taste with "just enough hop bitterness," according to a news release.

Where can I buy Centurion Ale?

Beer designed by Bucks County Community College students in on tap at the Moss Mill Brewing Company at 109 Pike Circle in Huntingdon Valley. You can also purchase packs of four cans to-go. Moss Mill is open 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday; noon to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

It takes its name from BCCC's mascot.

Bucks County Community College offers degree in brewing

The Bucks County Community College offers an associate of applied science in brewing and fermentation science program. The 60-credit program includes courses in biological science, microbiology, brewing analysis and quality assurances. The college says it is the only brewing science associate degree in the Philadelphia metro area.

The coursework requires regular trips to local breweries. All students must be 21 or older.

Bucks County's brewery scene has exploded in recent years and now includes about 30 small businesses. These breweries support jobs and the tourism industry in Bucks.

In 2019, the Bucks County Ale Trail opened to help drive visits and boost support for local breweries. It began with 15 breweries, and has nearly doubled in size, helping craft beer lovers explore the many individual styles available within a single county.
