Bucks County haunted houses, hayrides and more scare up fun for Halloween

Bucks County is beautiful on any fall day, but when the sun goes down and the moon hangs low, it's all about the scares here.

With October here and Halloween coming, some Bucks County favorites return for some seasonal fun with haunted houses, haunted hayrides, corn mazes and other experiences sure to bring the fright.

Visit Bucks County, the county's tourism agency, has rounded up a list of fun spots and we added a few more. Check individual websites for full ticket information and operating hours.

Halloween House Bucks County

New on the fall scare schedule this year is a haunted house of sorts at the Oxford Valley Mall in Middletown. "Halloween House Bucks County is a completely immersive, one of a kind Halloween experience where you are transported to an all Halloween world," organizers say. "Every one of our impeccably detailed, fully realized rooms is a different Halloween theme (including Stranger Things and The Nightmare Before Christmas) designed to make every Halloween lover's experience unforgettable." They say there is no gore, jump scares or actors inside.

Open now through Halloween. The event is about 45 minutes long and guests need timed tickets ($25 to $30) to enter.

New Hope Railroad

Check out the railroad's Halloween Event on select dates from Oct. 8 to 30. The 40-minute experience, including train ride and fun at the station, promises scary creatures that will "test the nerve of all onboard." Recommended for those 13 and older.

Halloween in Newtown

The beloved Newtown Borough Halloween Parade is back again this year with plenty of tricks and treats. Come take part or just watch along the route on Oct. 29. Registration at the Stocking Works on State Street starts at 8:30 a.m. and the parade kicks off an hour later. It ends at Brian Gregg Park on Congress Street.

Croydon State Penitentiary

This neighborhood haunt is back after a few years away. This new, one-night only event is brought to the community behind the popular Croydon Haunted Hollows and The Last Stop. It's free, but donations are always welcome for all these volunteers hard work. The Penitentiary challenges visitors to escape its haunted confines. The event will be held Halloween night from 6 -9 p.m.

Valley of Fear Original Haunted Hayride

This Bucks County mainstay is in its 32nd year and says it has expanded and created a new experience for visitors with over 10 new scenes and all new sound experience.

Ghost Tours of New Hope

Grab a flashlight and take to the streets with Ghost Tours of New Hope to hear the chilling tales of the area's former residents who may have never left during a lantern-led walk. Public tours are every Saturday night from the first Saturday in June up to and including the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

During the month of October only, organizers also feature public tours on Friday nights (in addition to Saturday nights) and on Halloween night. All public tours meet Saturday nights at 8 p.m. at the corner of Main and Ferry Streets (right in front of the Parry Mansion) and cost $10 per person.

The Count's Halloween Spooktacular at Sesame Place

Come in costume and celebrate silly, not-too-spooky fun at The Count’s Halloween Spooktacular at Sesame Place, says Visit Bucks County. The park will be transformed into a family-friendly Halloween haven and guests will enjoy trick-or-treating around the park, Halloween-themed shows, participating in the interactive Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt, Furry Friends Dance Party, pumpkin decorating, swinging, flying, and cruising on Count von Count-themed mechanical rides, and unique photo opportunities with everyone’s favorite furry friends dressed up in costume on their Halloween-themed floats. The special Halloween event runs through Nov. 6

Sleepy Hollow Haunted Acres

Sleepy Hollow Haunted Acres in Newtown is bringing back its haunted hayride for 2022. It will take visitors through the dark woods and fields. Its House in the Hollow also returns, billing itself as "quite possibly the most haunted house in Bucks County." Up for more scares? Check out the abandoned village of The Field. Nights include bonfires with live music.

Winding Brook Farm Haunts

Enter the "Gates of Hell" in Warrington for fun on the farm. "There are hauntings along these paths that may catch you off guard and have you wondering where you can turn to get away from the blood curdling screams and intimidating darkness," according the the farm's website. This year's attractions include the Corn Walk of Horror, the Haunted Hay Maze and the Night Chills Haunted Hayride.

Shady Brook Farm

Check out the lights of Eerie Illuminations this fall. "Hop aboard a wagon ride for a not-so-spooky trip through the woods where you'll encounter familiar Halloween characters and festive fiends all lit up and dancing to your favorite tunes. It's fun for kids of all ages," the farm says on its website.

Shady Brooks also has its popular Fall Fest activities, including wagon rides, bonfires, five-acre corn maze and more.

Spooky Sundays at the Seaport invites visitors to join the education staff each Sunday to explore special ghoulish themes. Discover what fish and creatures lurk beneath the water in the Paddle Penn’s Landing Boat Basin at “River Invaders,” or learn about the origins behind nautical legends with “Mermaids and Monsters.” Find out the possible impacts of “Sea Level Rise” or join seafarers to learn whether “Ghost Ships,” ships found without a living crew, were ever discovered on the Delaware River.
