Bucks County honors its veterans with parades, ceremonies. How to take part

Veterans Day honors all those who have served our country and have put their lives on the line for others.

This year, the actual date, Nov. 11, falls on a Saturday but events will be held throughout the week leading up to Veterans Day and Friday, Nov. 10, is the federal legal holiday.

Among events planned to honor Veterans Day in Bucks County are:

Running for good causes in Langhorne

The 8th annual Veterans Day 5K/Fun Walk will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Langhorne Borough. Proceeds raised by participants will help benefit Delaware Valley Stand Down, Salute 2 Service and Shamrock Rains as well as other veteran charities and projects.

Saluting vets at American Legion post

Langhorne will also host its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Jesse W. Soby American Legion Post, 115 W. Richardson Ave., beginning at 10 a.m. on Nov 11. The event will include a prayer by Post Chaplain Larry Landes, remarks by elected officials, and an address by Army Veteran William Bess, whose son, Timothy raised funds as part of an Eagle Scout project to replace a flagpole at the base. The flagpole will be dedicated before a rifle squad will fire three volleys and taps will be played. Then participants will march to the American Revolutionary War burial site at Bellevue and Flowers avenues in the borough to honor the veterans buried there with another rifle salute and taps. Spectators can also visit the military museum in the post until 1 p.m. that day.

Ceremony, parade in Lower Makefield

In Lower Makefield a Veterans Day parade and ceremony will take at Veterans Square off Edgewood Road starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, said Theodore Smith, commander of the Knowles-Doyle American Legion Post 317 in Yardley.

Yardley to host ceremony at Veterans Memorial

On Veterans Day, a ceremony will take place at the Yardley Veterans Memorial on Delaware Avenue at Afton Avenue, beginning at 11 a.m., Smith said. Local members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will participate.,

Veterans to visit elementary school in Council Rock district

On Nov. 9, more than 80 veterans will participate in the Vets Day Assembly at Goodnoe Elementary School, 298 Frost Lane, Newtown. The Council Rock North Marching Band will perform and there will be songs and comments from the veterans. The community is invited to attend. Rain date for the event is Nov .10.
