Some Bucks County schools to dismiss early ahead of severe thunderstorms

Some Bucks County school districts are dismissing early in anticipation of severe thunderstorms which are expected to hit the area Monday afternoon.

Lee Robertson, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said a cold front bringing the rainfall to the region is expected to come to the Bucks County area between 3 and 6 p.m.

“We are pretty certain that a very strong line of thunderstorms will move into the area this afternoon," he said.

The storms could bring hail, isolated tornadoes and high wind gusts to the area.

Quakertown Community School District, Palisades School District and Pennridge School District are dismissing students early Monday in anticipation of the storm.

Robertson said the storms are expected to come through the area quickly. After the storms pass, the rest of the day should be clear, he said.

The weather service said wind gusts of up to 60 mph will be the main threat of the storms. Robertson said forecasters are not expecting widespread flash flooding from the storms.

Pennridge School District will be dismissing early in anticipation of the expected storms. The high school will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m., the middle schools will dismiss at 12:15 p.m. Guth and Sellersville elementary schools will dismiss at 12:45 p.m. All other elementary schools will dismiss at 1 p.m.

Quakertown Community School District will also be dismissing early Monday. The high school will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. and Strayer Middle School will dismiss at noon. Elementary schools and the office will close at 1 p.m.

Palisades School District secondary schools dismissed at 10:50 a.m., and elementary schools are going to dismiss at 12:15 p.m.

Bensalem School District and Council Rock School District have also canceled after school and evening activities because of the storm.

The weather service said isolated tornadoes are possible from the storm. A tornado hit the Bucks County area just over a month ago. In early April, an EF1 tornado caused damage in the Bedminster area. No one was injured in the incident.

Robertson urged residents to keep an eye out for any severe thunderstorm warnings or watches. Neither had been issued as of 10 a.m. Monday.
