Bucs awarded sixth-round compensatory draft pick

TAMPA — The Bucs were awarded a sixth-round compensatory pick in the 2021 NFL draft for losing receiver Breshad Perriman to the New York Jets in free agency last season.

The Bucs now own eight total selections in the April draft. They have one in each of the first six rounds and two selections in the seventh round.

Teams qualify for the extra draft selections by losing more or better free agents than they gain based on a formula that takes into account things such as salary, playing time and postseason honors.

The Bucs’ only addition that qualified for that formula as a free agent gained was quarterback Tom Brady. The Bucs lost several free agents in 2020, but only defensive end Carl Nassib, nose tackle Beau Allen and Perriman factored into the formula.

Quarterback Jameis Winston, who signed a one-year deal with the Saints, didn’t qualify based on his low salary. The result was that one of the 36 compensatory draft picks awarded by the NFL to teams Wednesday went to the Bucs.
