Bucyrus committees approve several water maintenance projects

The Bucyrus Service and Finance committees approved several water maintenance projects requests delivered by Makeever and Associates owner Dylan Wyatt at Thursday's meeting.

The requests were for bidding approval for 330 East waterline project, tap grant projects, and Sulphur Springs/Locust Grove waterline project. The last request was for applying for a design loan for Morton/Linlaire package plants.

“These waterline extension projects are all to service citizens of the county who do not currently have public drinking water at their residence,” Wyatt said. “These are people that have private wells or cisterns.”

Projects outline

The first project concerns the waterline extension of about 3,000 feet, picking up about eight customers east of state Route 602 after the completion of the relevant plans. With the help of the project, the city will be able to expand its water system to the customers living outside of the city limits.

“Several of these customers have called in to the city expressing their interest in water, and showed up in our office expressing interest in water,” Wyatt said.

The estimated cost of the project is $154,600, and it is funded with local funds. However, a portion of the project, $14,100 that covers the actual water services to be installed, is covered through a county grant through the Ohio Department of Development Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Program.

City resident Greg White said he thought it was ridiculous to spend in that range for only eight customers.

The next project concerned taps installment. More than 100 taps should be installed, according to project plans, $292,600, which comes through the grant funding, Wyatt said.

“We have plans and specifications ready to go, ready to be advertised for a bid,” he said.

The Sulphur Springs/Locust Grove waterline project call for installing 27,000 feet of waterline to service residents in that area. It is joint project with Crawford County commissioners, Wyatt said.

Design loan request

Finally, Wyatt requested permission to apply for a design loan for Morton and Linlaire package plants east of Bucyrus that the city took over from the commissioners about three years ago.

“The intention of this project is to be able to do away with these plants and pump the sewage to the City of Bucyrus,” Wyatt said.

The design loan, said Wyatt, would help pay for the engineering costs to prepare plants to get them ready for bid.

The loan might come from the Water Pollution Control Loan Fund with the anticipation Makeever and Associates would have the plans ready for the Ohio Department of Development grant they had just applied for.

“The intention would be if we find out that we get that grant would be to get it ready as soon as possible,” Wyatt said.

He said that would help with the future maintenance of the plants, reduce costs of maintenance, and help stop the discharges associated with the plants into the rivers and creeks.

“The primary purpose of this project is to regionalize these two wastewater plants by pumping the sewage back to the city system,” Wyatt said.

The water projects will be further discussed at a City Council meeting.
