Buffalo takes charge early to beat Akron Zips in MAC women's basketball

Buffalo sprinted out to a 21-10 lead by the end of the first quarter and led wire to wire in a 64-50 win over visiting Akron Wednesday in Mid-American Conference women's basketball.

Re'Shawna Stone scored 20 points and Zakiyah Winfield added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls (11-15, 6-11), who led by as many as 14 points in the first quarter.

After falling behind early, the Zips (16-12, 7-10) rallied in the second and third quarters and entered the fourth trailing 46-40. But Buffalo opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run, and Akron never got closer than five points the rest of the game.

Molly Neitzel scored a team-high 14 points, Rachel Martindale had 11 points and Reagan Bass (Strongsville) pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds for the Zips.
