Building permit issued to Aldi Inc. at old Hornbacher's location in Grand Forks
Jul. 16—The building that once hosted a few supermarkets in Grand Forks will again be hosting another.
The city of Grand Forks issued a $2 million building permit to Aldi Inc., a national supermarket chain, for interior renovations for a building at 2771 32nd Ave. S. That location previously housed a Hornbacher's supermarket, which closed in 2018 after three years in operation. Prior to that it was a Super One grocery store.
Construction at the 32nd Avenue location appears to have begun recently, and the face of the building was being torn down, making way for a new exterior.
In March, Aldi advertised for a management position for a location in Grand Forks. The job listing turned up on the Job Service of North Dakota website, as well as other job-listing websites. Listings for the management position have since been taken down, as have those for other positions at Aldi.
In March, Dustin Hillebrand told the Herald it wasn't unusual for a company relocating to the area to send a manager, then proceed with hiring locally.
Aldi was founded in 1961, in Germany. In 1976, the company came to the United States and opened its first store in Iowa. The company has more than 2,000 stores spread across 36 states.
There are two Aldi stories in Fargo, as well as one in Dilworth, Minn., according to the company's website.
According to a Feb. 10, CNBC report, the company announced its intention to expand, by adding 100 new stores across the United States.
