SHREWSBURY — Construction is underway on an 8,400-square-foot office building at the corner of Shrewsbury Crossing plaza where Route 9 and Grafton Street meet.

Mounds of dirt cover the lot where a building with 20 offices is expected to take shape. Fidelity Investments, a financial services company headquartered in Boston, will occupy the building with a staff of 35 employees.

Fidelity is currently situated in the westernmost portion of the plaza, commonly referred to as Shrewsbury Crossing I, at 551 Boston Turnpike. It shares a building with Japanese restaurant Sawa Hibachi.

The location where Fidelity is looking to move, often referred to as Shrewsbury Crossing II at 571 Boston Turnpike, is anchored by home goods store At Home and office supply retailer Staples.

The new development will sit right across from Staples.

The Planning Board application filed in March by Shrewsbury Crossing II LLC showed that Fidelity wants to make the move after “outgrowing” its current space.

The Planning Board approved the plans in April, along with a reduction in the number of parking spaces in the plaza, from 565 to 476, to make way for the new building.
