New buildings, facelifts underway across Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Most Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools construction projects approved by voters in a record $922 million bond five years ago are completed or underway.
The bond referendum was the largest in Mecklenburg history and the second largest in North Carolina. It authorized borrowing money to build 10 new schools, replace the buildings of seven existing ones and cover additions and renovations at 12 schools.
As of Nov. 30, 2021, nine projects totaling $238 million have been completed; nine worth $381 million are under construction; and eight totaling $325 million are in the design phase, according to the district’s project dashboard.
Three projects with a combined price tag of $76 million have not been started.
CMS building projects
Briarwood Elementary, 1001 Wilann Drive
A 45-classroom facility is replacing the school that was built in 1956. Remaining site work is scheduled for completion this year.
Bruns Avenue Elementary, 501 South Bruns Avenue
A new, 45-classroom elementary school is scheduled for design in the spring. The original school was built in 1969.
Collinswood Language Academy, 5621 Flagstaff Drive
The academy home to a 63-classroom, K-8 facility on the site of the Smith Family Center.
Career and Technical Education, includes four sites
Olympic, Harding, Garinger and South Mecklenburg high schools went through a series of facelifts, including kitchen equipment and the installation of technology classrooms and a culinary arts lab at South Mecklenburg. The project is on schedule for completion this month.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Academy, 5833 Milhaven Lane
Now open, the K-12 public school is unique because it’s the only public, separate K-12 school exclusively for behavioral and/or emotional needs of students with disabilities.
E.E. Waddell Language Academy, 7030 Nations Ford Road
The language academy will be repurposed and reopen as a magnet high school. It’s waiting for building permit approval. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring and be ready for students in August 2023.
East Mecklenburg High, 6800 Monroe Road
The new facility will include 30 classrooms. It is scheduled to open in August.
Garinger High School, 1100 Eastway Drive
The building’s makeover includes 16 new classrooms.
Harding High School, 2001 Aleghany Street
The completed project includes the addition of a second gym and renovations to the kitchen, cafeteria and existing gym.
J.T. Williams Montessori, 2400 Carmine Street
The school will undergo renovations that focus on architectural improvements. It’s scheduled to be completed in August 2024.
Lansdowne Elementary School, 7200 Folger Drive
The new 45-classroom building will replace the old school built in 1959. It is scheduled for completion in August.
Lincoln Heights Elementary School, 1900 Newcastle Street
The building is being repurposed for a magnet school. It will be ready for occupancy in August 2023.
Montclaire Elementary School, 5801 Farmbrook Drive
The new 45-classroom facility that replaced the original school built in 1958 is completed and open.
Mountain Island Lake Academy, 7905 Pleasant Grove Road
The K-8 school will include a middle school gymnasium and visual and performing arts classrooms. It’s scheduled to begin construction in the spring and open in August 2023.
New elementary school, 11000 Beau Riley Road
The new facility will relieve overcrowding at Elon, Hawk Ridge and Polo Ridge elementary schools. Construction is scheduled to start in the spring and be completed in August 2023. The 45-classroom school will be located across from Ardrey Kell High.

New elementary school, 11615 Idlewild Road in Matthews
The new school will relieve overcrowding at Bain, Lebanon and Piney Grove elementary schools. Construction is underway and scheduled to be completed in August.
New elementary school, 7515 The Plaza in Charlotte
The new school will relieve overcrowding at Hidden Valley, JW Grier and Newell elementary schools. The 45-classroom building will be located next to Northridge Middle School and is scheduled for completion in August 2023.
New elementary school, 5932 Farm Pond Lane
The 45-classroom building is scheduled to open in August. 2023.
New high school, 14947 York Road
The new 100-classroom high school will relieve overcrowding at Olympic High. The project on York Road is underway and scheduled to be completed in August.
New high school, 12218 North Community
The new 100-classroom building will relieve overcrowding at South Mecklenburg, Ardrey Kell and Myers Park high schools. It will include athletic fields and a stadium. It’s scheduled to open in August 2024.
Sharon Elementary School, 4330 Foxcroft Road
The project includes a 16-classroom building and larger cafeteria. Construction was 99% complete as of November.
Northwest School of the Arts, 1415 Beatties Ford Road
The building will replace the original school built in 1952. Design is scheduled to start early this year. It’s scheduled to be finished in August 2024.
North Academy of World Languages, 12201 Hambright Road, Huntersville
The new, 66-classroom K-8 language immersion facility located on the old J.M. Alexander Middle School site and is completed.
Shamrock Gardens Elementary, 3301 Country Club Drive, Charlotte
The new 45-classroom replacement facility will be completed in August 2022.
South Mecklenburg High, 8900 Park Road, Charlotte
The project includes renovating and replacing two classroom buildings bult in 1958. Planning is underway and design is scheduled to start this year. It’s projected to be completed in January 2025.
South Academy of International Languages, 8300 Nations Ford Road, Charlotte
The new 71-classroom K-8 facility is completed.
West Charlotte High School, 2219 Senior Drive, Charlotte
The new 100-classroom facility will replace the current facility built in 1954. The pool deck has been poured, lights installed. It’s set to be completed in August.
South Pine Academy, 2541 Sandy Porter Road
The new 45-classroom elementary school relieves overcrowding at Nations Ford, Sterling and Steele Creek elementary schools. It is completed.
West Mecklenburg High, 7400 Tuckaseegee Road
The school has a new gymnasium, with the existing gymnasium working as auxiliary.
