Bulgaria may sell Russian-made nuclear reactors to Ukraine – report

Bulgaria is nearing an agreement to sell two Russian-made nuclear reactors to Ukraine's state-owned nuclear company Energoatom, The Wall Street Journal reported on July 6.

According to the ongoing negotiations, Bulgarian state energy company NEK will sell equipment from the unfinished Belene nuclear power plant to Energoatom, with a value of at least EUR 600 million ($653 million).

This marks the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion that nuclear technology of Russian origin will be used to increase electricity production in Ukraine, the article notes.

"The fact that Bulgaria, a former Soviet satellite state long friendly with Moscow, is considering the deal is a sign of how much Russian clout has eroded in the European Union’s eastern states," WSJ writes.
