RUDYARD – The Rudyard Bulldogs got 27 points from Cam Peterson and needed every one of them as they slipped past the Cedarville-DeTour Islanders on Thursday night 58-53 in an Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference contest.

The Islanders held an 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but were outgunned 19-12 in the second period and went into the break trailing 26-23.

The Islanders bounced back in the third quarter as Cason Smith scored 10 points in the period and Hossack Sweeney added six.  Each hit two three-pointers in the third and gave Cedarville-DeTour a 44-40 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

The Bulldogs made up the difference and then some in the fourth as they doubled up the Islanders 18-8 in the period and hung on for the win.

In addition to Peterson’s scoring outburst, Dylan McMillan was also in double figures for Rudyard with 11 points. Peterson also led the ‘Dogs on the glass with five rebounds.

Smith led the Islanders with 19 points on the night, while Sweeney chipped in with 15.

Pickford handles Engadine

PICKFORD – The Pickford Panthers evened their record at 3-3 after notching an easy 42-16 win over the Engadine Eagles on Thursday night at the Purple Palace.

Neither team was particularly sharp offensively, as the Eagles managed just two points in the first quarter and the Panthers put up a goose egg in the final eight minutes.

Pickford took advantage of Engadine’s struggles early and jumped out to a 15-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, behind seven points from Jacob Edington.  He led the Panthers on the night with 13 points and was the only player from either side to hit double figures.  Eli McDonald scored eight for the Panthers, while Quincy Michalski and Owen McConkey each finished with six.

Pickford, 3-3, will be off until Thursday when the Panthers will host the Rudyard Bulldogs in another Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference matchup.

Brimley overcomes Newberry with second-half surge

NEWBERRY – The Brimley Bays had some offensive struggles in the second quarter of Friday night’s Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference game against the Newberry Indians but rallied in the second half to come away with a 47-23 win.

Brimley put up 15 points in the first quarter, but went quiet in the second quarter, putting up just three points.  Newberry took advantage of the lull and scored nine points in the second, trimming the Brimley lead to 18-13 heading into the half.

In the second half, the Bays regained their offensive footing and put the clamps on defensively.  They held the Indians to 10 total points over the final two quarters and scored 29 to widen their margin of victory.

Ceara LeBlanc led the Bas with 14 points on the night, while Autumn Tremblay hit for 13.

The Bays, 2-5, will be at Pickford on Monday night.
