Bulldogs rally their way past Lady Tigers

Jan. 21—LEBANON — Phoebe Carpenter recorded a double- double ( 10 points, 11 rebounds) and the Lyman Memorial girls basketball team fought through early foul trouble and rallied from a 9- point deficit in the third quarter for a 34- 28 non- conference victory Thursday night over Windham Tech.

Carpenter also had six blocks, three assists and two steals for the Bulldogs (8-3), who won their seventh straight game and in the process qualified for the Class S state tournament.

Lyman Memorial trailed 16- 12 at halftime and 21- 12 early in the third quarter before making its way back.

Sophomore Jenny Lopez finished with 16 points, five assists and nine steals and Kassidy LaTour added six points, eight rebounds, four steals and one block in the win.

Bella DeJesus and Baylee Miller each had nine points for the Lady Tigers (8-3), which had a 4-game winning streak snapped.

They host Bolton at 5 p. m. on Monday in a stretch of four games in five days.

Lyman Memorial ( 3- 0 league) travels to North Stonington on Saturday for an ECC Division IV game against Wheeler at 2: 30 p. m.

Lyman Memorial won the first meeting between the two teams 57- 25 on Dec. 16 in Lebanon.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Noah Cordone scored a gamehigh 29 points for E.O. Smith, which dropped a 75- 40 Central Connecticut Conference inter- division game at Newington.

Cordone shot 10-of-15 from the foul line for the Panthers (1-8), who played with just eight active players on the roster.

Owen Sgro ( 4 points) put E. O. Smith on the scoreboard with a free throw near the midway point of the first quarter after the host Nor'easters ( 7- 4) jumped out to an 11- 0 lead.

Levi Frieland added four points for E. O. Smith.

Lebron Beckford and Keleen Roby each had 12 points for Newington, which led by 29 points at halftime.

E.O. Smith travels to Enfield on Monday for a CCC East Division game at 6: 45 p. m.

WRESTLING

Gabriel Garcia recorded the fastest fall of the match — 15 seconds into the first period — at 120 pounds as Windham remained undefeated in Division II of the ECC with a 66-12 victory at Ledyard.

The Whips (8-2, 3-0 league) also received pins from Delmazio Despard ( 113), Oscar Mendoza- soto ( 126), Ariel Cortez- roque ( 145), Nicholas Blanco ( 152), Aaron Palacios-Mendoza (160) and Malachi Fowler (195).

EJ Jenkins ( 132) and Jaycee Diaz 285) each won by decision while Sebastian Rodriguez (170) won by technical fall.

Windham will compete on Saturday at Platt High School in Meriden along with Nonnewaug, Bloomfield and Canton.

The Whips return to ECC competition next Wednesday at Killingly.
