A bullet was found in a South Milwaukee Middle School classroom Monday.

In a letter to parents, the South Milwaukee School District said a nine millimeter bullet was found in a sixth grade classroom Monday at the school. No firearm was found.

"Immediately after the bullet was discovered, the middle school administration and the South Milwaukee Police Department resource officers set in action a plan to ensure the safety of the student body that included a search of students who had access to that area during the time prior to the bullet’s discovery. At all times, an officer and a staff member were present during the searches. Approximately 40 students were searched. No firearms or other ammunition were found during the SMPD search," the district's letter said.

South Milwaukee Police Chief William Jessup said the department has school resource officers assigned to the district's schools and that the department is investigating the incident but said it has no information yet on how the bullet got into the school.

"We also have no evidence to indicate there was any danger to students or staff," Jessup said in an email.
