Bullet hits two siblings riding with parents on California freeway, family friend says

Parents returning home from a party with their children at first were confused when they heard a sound “like somebody popped a balloon” while driving on a California highway, a family friend said.

Then their 13-year-old son in the back seat said “gunshot,” friend Christina Lee told KGO.

“Dad looked behind because he was passenger and realized that his son was bleeding and told his wife pull over now and the daughter just said, ‘Ow!’” Lee told the station.

A single bullet fired into the door went through the boy’s leg into his 12-year-old sister’s abdomen, Lee told KRON.

The shooting took place on Interstate 880 near Hesperian Boulevard in San Lorenzo around 7:05 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The motive for the shooting and gunman are still under investigation, officers said.

No disputes or road-rage incidents preceded the shooting, Lee told KRON, leaving the family baffled.

“They are incredibly traumatized, they’re still in a state of shock,” Lee told KNTV. “This is not something that’s ever been a part of their life in the past.”

The 12-year-old girl remains hospitalized after surgery, KGO reported.

“You never think it’s going to happen to you, especially a family like this, you know,” Lee told KGO.

CHP officers ask anyone with information on the shooting to call 707-917-4491.

San Lorenzo is about 25 miles southeast of San Francisco.
