Oct. 28—Canines on the Creek

—What: Dog and owner Halloween costume contest and parade. $25 per dog. It is requested that all dogs be well behaved and on leashes with shots up to date. Also prizes, exhibitors and an agility demonstration from Breakaway Action Dogs.

Damascus Lions Club

Pancake Breakfast

—What: The Damascus Lions Club will host pancake, sausage and scrambled egg breakfast. The ticket donation is adults $15, children $7 and under 4-free. A bake/craft table will offer goodies. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from any Damascus Lions. All proceeds from the Lions fundraisers are used for approved community projects.

HarvestFest Artisan Craft Fair

—What: A wide selection of vendors, a sweet shoppe, Kate's Korner market all with unique items, and a raffle of artisan donated items.

Key City Foundation Octoberfest 5K Fun Run

—What: This is a 5K fundraiser for Key City Foundation's youth sports programs in Frederick County. There are 5K and 1M race options. Kids under 10 can register for free. We offer a special discount registration fee for teachers, military, healthcare workers and first responders (police/fire/EMS). In addition to the races, there will be a family fun zone and beer garden. Volunteer opportunities are also available. A portion of the race proceeds will be donated to nonprofit organization Athletes Serving Athletes.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

—What: Frederick County will take part in the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This semi-annual drive-through event offers county residents the opportunity to safely dispose of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and prevent medicine misuse or diversion. As an additional service to the community, the event will also provide for the disposal of used or unused sharps including syringes, needles, lancets, and auto injectors.

—Where: Law enforcement and Health Department personnel will be collecting medicines and sharps in a drive-through event format at the following locations:

'Nixie Hollow' Art Exhibit

—What: Welcome to Nixie Hollow, the graduate ceramics and mixed media art show by sculptor and MFA candidate Annie Boyer. Nixie Hollow is a place in time after humans are no longer present on earth. Nixie Hollow is an abandoned farm where fantastic creatures and plant life have risen from the ashes, floods and nuclear fallout from irresponsible human stewardship of the earth. The otherworldly creatures roam the hollow and make homes in the ramshackle home, the barn and the surrounding hollow. The creatures can be cute and appealing or have a dark side.

—When: The exhibit runs from Monday, Oct. 30, through Nov. 10, with the opening reception/artist talk 4-6 p.m. Nov. 4.

Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area Year In Review

—What: The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area's annual Year In Review will take place on, at the The event is free; tickets are required. The program will feature bestselling author Clint Smith as he considers "The Power of Milestone Anniversaries: Celebrating and Reckoning." The fireside chat-style presentation will take place on the 159th anniversary of Emancipation in Maryland, as Frederick County's 275th anniversary year draws to a close and looks ahead to the nation's 250th anniversary.

USSVI Tri-State Base of Submarine Veterans Meeting

—What: The USSVI Tri-State Base of Submarine Veterans will meet. If you are a Navy veteran and qualified on a submarine, they request that you join them. The Tri-State Base of West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania meets every month, rotating between states. They have community projects, participate in veteran's projects, parades, etc. Spouses and friends are welcome at the meetings. They have an auxiliary to support the men with projects.

Literacy Council Volunteer Information Sessions

—What: The Literacy Council is seeking volunteers to be trained as tutors for our one-to-one/small group tutoring program. In addition, they are also seeking volunteers with teaching experience and/or experience working with English Language Learners to lead curriculum-based ESL classes that will meet weekly for 60-90 minutes for 10-12 weeks. Classes are currently virtual on Zoom, and in-person. Note: All sessions are currently being, offered as Zoom calls.
