Bundle up! Here’s what the forecast says is in store for Halloween night in Wichita

Halloween is Tuesday, and looks like it’s going to be a cold one this year.

While the National Weather Service forecasts a clear and sunny day in Wichita Tuesday, the low in the evening is expected to be near 24 degrees Fahrenheit, while the high during the day is only expected to reach 42 degrees.

Popular trick-or-treating hours in Sedgwick County run from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., according to the county website. The weather service’s hour-by-hour forecast shows the temperature at 40 degrees at 5 p.m. and 38 degrees at 6 p.m. The temperature is expected to fall to 31 degrees at 9 p.m. and down to 29 by 10 p.m.

Whether you’re planning on staying inside and passing out candy to trick-or-treaters or you’re a trick-or-treater yourself, it’s important to stay warm. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up some tips to keep warm during a cold front, both indoors and outside.

How to keep warm in your Wichita home this fall and winter

Whether you’re waiting at your door for trick-or-treaters or turning off your porch light and not participating in the Halloween tradition, you should take steps to staying warm this week as temperatures drop.

Here are some tips to winterize your Wichita home, from Kansas Gas Service:

  • Keep your windows covered. Even though it may be fun to watch the trick-or-treaters arrive, it’s best to keep windows covered using blinds or curtains to keep warm air inside. Instead, you can wait for your doorbell to ring.

  • Seal up cracks. Now is a good time to seal up cracks in your home to prepare for the fall and winter seasons. Kansas Gas Service recommends weather-stripping or caulk to seal up leaks. As a bonus, sealing cracks could also help prevent intrusion from mice and rats during “peak rodent season” in Kansas.

  • Wear layers. Wearing additional layers, even if it means adding on to your Halloween costume, is an easy and free way to not only stay warm, but save on energy costs during cold weather.

  • While it’s tricky if you’re handing out candy, try to keep your door closed as much as possible to prevent cold air from getting into your home.

How to stay warm while out trick-or-treating

Here are some tips to keep trick-or-treaters warm while out and about in Wichita Tuesday night, from Accuweather:

  • Wear a warm costume or add layers to it. Adding additional layers to your costume is an easy way to provide more warmth.

  • Carry a hot drink. Carrying something warm to sip on, like cider, in a thermos is a good way to keep your body warm when needed and enjoy a treat.

  • Use hand and back warmers. Accuweather recommends putting warmers in gloves, socks and pockets to provide extra warmth while going from house to house. Hand and back warmers can be purchased at grocery and convenience stores.

It’s also important to take necessary safety steps when out and about on Halloween night. Sedgwick County says children under the age of 12 should not be allowed to be unsupervised when trick-or-treating.
