Visitors can buy and vote on their favorite burger from 26 teams competing in four categories: restaurants, businesses, backyard grillers and Rotary Club amateurs.

A public Flag Day ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at WoodmenLife's Houma chapter meeting hall at 309 South Hollywood Road in Houma.

“It is one of our most important events to honor our flag and country and promote patriotism in our community,” said local Woodmen of the World Secretary Amy Elliot.

The free event is co-sponsored by Houma's Elks Lodge.

Guests are asked to bring worn or tattered American flags, state flags or POW-MIA flags to be retired. Active-duty service members are invited to attend in uniform. Veterans can wear baseball-style caps displaying the military branch they served in.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established June 14 as Flag Day. In 1949, President Harry Truman, an Elks member, was inspired through his lodge in Independence, Missouri, to sign an act of Congress that dedicated June 14 as a national observance.

Dance to Cajun music

Dance or just listen to the Bayou Cajun Mix Band during a concert and dinner Saturday.

The event, a fundraiser for the Cajun French Music Association's local chapter, is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Houma Municipal Auditorium, 800 Verret St.

Admission, $10 apiece at the door, includes a spaghetti dinner while it lasts. Drinks and dessert sold separately.

For information, call chapter President Margaret Hebert at 665-5829.

Enjoy a free concert

The Bayou Community Band will perform a family-friendly outdoor concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in Peltier Park, 151 Peltier Park Drive in Thibodaux.

Bring your lawn chair, blanket, family and friends to the free show.

Visit a pop-up shop

Check out booths featuring local artists, food trucks, small businesses and nonprofits at Pop-up at the Chamber.

Sponsored by the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce, it's scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the group's office, 6133 La. 311 in Houma.

Let the Cajun Ninja cook you dinner

Local cook the Cajun Ninja will whip up original recipes Saturday to benefit the Bayou Country Children's Museum in Thibodaux.

The Cajun Ninja Cooking Demo & Dinner is scheduled for 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute, 175 Bowie Road, on the Nicholls State University campus in Thibodaux.

Tickets, $100 apiece at bit.ly/CajunNinjaDemo, include a cooking demonstration, dinner and drinks, including the main course of shrimp fettuccine.
