Burglary suspect arrested after hiding under crate on rooftop for hours

A burglary suspect was arrested by police on the roof of a business after he hid in a crate for hours to avoid detection.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a burglary alarm was triggered at 2:12 a.m. Tuesday at a business located at 1212 Lemon Street, near the 10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.

Video from Sky5 shows a large hole in the roof, which was likely how the thieves got into the building.

“It looks like they cut through the rooftop and got away with [what looks to be] a lot of merchandise…you can see bags and boxes scattered,” KTLA 5’s Rich Prickett said.

Police helicopters circling the business just after 5 a.m. were using spotlights to track the two reported suspects down; they were especially focused on one overturned crate in the corner of the building’s rooftop, Sky5 footage showed.

Eventually, Sky5 left the scene to go live over a bus fire in Monterey Park, but when it returned to the scene at 6:30 a.m., one man had been taken into custody with the help of a Los Angeles Fire Department fire truck, which extended its ladder to allow police to get onto the roof.

The suspect was seen in handcuffs on the rooftop, and the container that police had been focusing on during their initial search had been moved, indicating the suspect was hiding underneath it while it was overturned.

“That person in custody was hiding under the container for hours,” Prickett said.

The suspect was eventually allowed to descend from the roof via the LAFD engine ladder.

A second suspect remains outstanding, police said. No description was immediately made available.
