Burke, Platte-Geddes among area golfers to contend at state

Jun. 6—The season's final South Dakota High School Activities Association sporting event is Monday and Tuesday.

Sioux Falls, Brookings and Spearfish will host four South Dakota state golf tournaments to cap the sports season. The Class AA girls tournament is at Bakker Crossing Golf Course in Sioux Falls, while Class A girls will play at Spearfish Canyon Golf Course.

The Class B schools will play in Brookings, with the boys at Brookings Country Club and the girls at Edgebrook Golf Course.

Here's a look at how the Mitchell-area teams stack up in the Class A and B tournaments:

Burke, Platte-Geddes expect to contend in Class B

BROOKINGS — Not far removed from their region titles, the Burke girls and Platte-Geddes boys project to be in the mix at state.

The Cougars, who won the 2019 state championship, claimed the Region 4B meet on May 21 at Lakeview Golf Course with a 307. Adisyn Indahl paced the team with an 87. Calli Davis (109) and Olivia Bull (111) placed 14th and 15th, respectively.

Burke, Platte-Geddes earn Region 4B golf titles

Indahl, who took seventh individually in 2019, is in Monday's No. 1 group. She joins Miller's Jayce Pugh, Estelline/Hendricks's Kaylee Johnson and Hamlin's Taylor Koisti in the 8:30 a.m. tee time.

Howard placed fourth in a crowded field of teams in the Region 2B tournament at Edgebrook on May 25. Estelline/Hendricks won the region meet with a 280. Howard and Chester were three shots off the pace and tied for second. Deubrook Area, which finished second in 2019, placed fourth at the region with a 287.

The Tigers are paced by Kenedy Koepsell, who took second in the region with a 91. She will tee off in the second group at 8:40 a.m. McCook Central/Montrose, which finished second in the Region 3B meet, is paced by Maggie Miles.

On the boys side, Platte-Geddes won the Region 4B meet at Wild Oak Golf Course on May 21 with a 239. Brody Boltjes (73) edged teammate Dawson Hoffman (74) for the individual medalist honors. Gregory's Eli Fogel (75) and Trey Murray (80) placed third and fourth, respectively. Ethan's Kaden Klumb (85) rounded out the top five.

Boltjes and Fogel tee off in the 8:30 a.m. group on Monday, along with Great Plains Lutheran's Sam Hansen and Selby Area's Tray Hettick.

Hoffman and Bridgewater-Emery's Jackson Stahl tee off in the 8:40 a.m. group, along with Deuel's Tanner Preheim and Ipswich's Chet Peterson.

Winner Area's Root among top contenders

SPEARFISH — Fresh off her Region 3A individual medalist honors, Winner Area's Rylee Root is Monday's lead group at the Class A tournament.

Root won the region meet on May 27 in Pierre with a 76. She will tee off at 8:30 a.m. with Mobridge-Pollock's Callie Weisbeck, Beresford's Maiya Muller and Canton's Olivia Sorlie.

The Warriors, who won the region meet with a 363, are also powered by Brennan Bachmann, Gracie Root, Devan Dougherty and Kelbi Meiners.

Chamberlain finished second in the Region 3A meet behind Alexis Cronk's 86. Cronk will tee off at 8:40 a.m., along with Sisseton's Kelsey Heath, Hot Springs' Jessi Schroeder and Sioux Falls Christian's Sydney Tims.

Parkston had two golfers — Grace Oakley and Kayla Neugebauer — place top-10 at the region meet. Oakley earned sixth place with a 92, while Neugebauer finished in eighth place with a 94.

Oakley tees off with the No. 4 group at 9 a.m. Monday, while Neugebauer is in the next group at 9:10 a.m.
