What Burlington-area families need to know before the first day of the 2022-23 school year

With the 2022-23 school year starting this week, here's what Burlington-area residents need to know about their local schools and districts ahead of the first day.

Burlington School District

Open House Schedule

  • All elementary schools- Tuesday, Aug. 23, 5-6:30 p.m.

  • Aldo Leopold Intermediate School- Tuesday, Aug. 23, 6-7:30 p.m.

  • Edward Stone Middle School- Tuesday, Aug. 23, 4:30-6 p.m.

  • Burlington High School- Tuesday, Aug. 23, 5:30-7 p.m.

  • V.I.B.E. Virtual Learning Program K-6th- Tuesday, Aug. 23, 4:30-6 p.m.

New School Meal Prices

The full price for elementary and intermediate students will now be $2 for breakfast and $2.75 for lunch.

The full price for middle and high school students will increase to $2.20 for breakfast and $2.85 for lunch.

Students at all grade levels who qualify for reduced meals will pay 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.

And adults will now be charged $2.75 for breakfast and $4.10 for lunch.

Update to District Programs

PiECES- The PiECES afterschool program is free for students K-8. The program is a unique opportunity for families looking for a safe, welcoming environment for their child during after-school hours. Families can sign up on the district's website.

Eagle View Community Health - Eagle View will continue services to students, staff and their families in the 2022-2023 school year. Any district family interested in services can call the clinic at (319) 753-9653.

Corse Early Childhood Center- There is a waiting list for all child care spots. Corse added the infant child care in June and currently has a waiting list. As of Aug. 16, there are only six spots available for 4-year-old preschool.

Update on Building Administrators

The Burlington School District is welcoming new and returning administrators for the 2022-23 school year.

Wesley White will be the principal at Grimes Elementary, after serving as assistant principal at Burlington High School.

Alec Clark will be the principal at North Hill Elementary, after serving as assistant principal at Burlington High School.

Sara Watkins will join Aldo Leopold Intermediate School as assistant principal, and comes to the district with 18 years of experience in education.

Nick Hauenstein will join Edward Stone Middle School as assistant principal with seven years of experience in education.

Annie Perez and Nathan Marting will join Burlington High School as assistant principals.

Brandon Kurovski and Jason Guerin will fill the roles of deans of students at Burlington High School, a position returning to the district this year. Prior to accepting the role as one of the two dean of students, Kurovski taught at Burlington High School.

Monica Myers will continue as principal of Burlington High School and is starting her 32nd year in education.

Principals Tim Bolander at Sunnyside Elementary, Stacy Hatten at Black Hawk Elementary, Tim Cradic at Aldo Leopold Intermediate School, Bryan Baker at Corse Early Childhood Center, Beth Shurtleff at the Vibe Virtual Learning Program, and Vida Long at Edward Stone Middle School will continue their roles for the 2022-23 school year.

Burlington Notre Dame

First Day

  • Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Starting Time

  • Elementary- 8 a.m.

  • Secondary (6th-12th)- 8:10 a.m.

Update on Building Administrators

Katie Frakes joins Burlington Notre Dame as assistant principal. Most recently Frakes worked as a Catholic school administrator in Galesburg, Illinois.

Update on Building Administrators

The district welcomes Mark Yeoman as the new principal of the elementary school and David Keane as curriculum director for the district.

Message from West Burlington Superintendent Lisa Beames

"We are excited for the start of the year. As with every year, there are new faces and as always we are excited to have them join our Falcon team.

"We've had a great few days as a teaching staff to learn as well as to prepare for our students. We look forward to the first day of school next Tuesday.

"Schools are made up of lots of people all working together to create the best environment possible for kids.

"I'd like to recognize everyone from bus drivers to cooks, from buildings and grounds to secretaries and paraeducators. Everyone plays a vital role in getting ready for a new year.
